Is/was there a Spelter City?

Postby greg » Wed Jun 25, 2008 2:12 pm

Hello — I've just come across a reference to a "Spelter City" in Okmulgee County. I don't find that listed in Mr. Shirk's "Oklahoma Place Names," which has 'em all. Maybe the spelling should be "Smelter City," but again I don't find that in the Shirk book.

I'm trying to find out more about a shooting in October 1922 involving a lawman from Henryetta (or Okmulgee County, anyway) and two carloads of Ku Klux Klansmen at a theater in Smelter/Spelter City. This ring any bells? Many thanks.

Found this on Yahoo Maps:

Looks to be West of 75 at the 266. Copy and paste this link in your browser. :D

Many thanks for this help. I've done as you said: copied and pasted to my browser. This was a big help, so, again: thanks.
