Dr. Isaac H. Reece

These are the journals (Listed at Bottom of page) of Dr. Isaac Hadley Reece, a turn-of-the-century doctor who lived in the little community of Manard, between Fort Gibson and Tahlequah, in southeastern Cherokee County, Oklahoma.  Dr. Reece was issued a medial license in 1900 by the state of Texas, in 1905 by Indian Territory, and in 1907 by the state of Oklahoma.  Dr. Reece was a member of the American Medical Association.  These journals are for the years 1910 and 1911, and are the only journals known to be in existence.  They show who Dr. Reece treated and for what illness.  They also show the amount the doctor charged for treatment, and how and by what means his patients paid for his services.  Almost all of the entries are for Manard and Fort Gibson; however, there are also treatment records for patients at Park Hill, Metory, Quallls, Cookson, Eureka and even an entry for the distant town of Claremore.

Dr. Reece's wife was Rose Mathis or Matthews, and their children were Clarence, Beulah, William (Bill or Willie) and Howard.  Dr. Reece built his home at the corner of Seven Mile Road and County Line Road in Cherokee County OK, between Fort Gibson and Tahlequah, and he died there of pneumonia in November of 1918, aged 35 years.  His house is still standing and is currently occupied (2007) by the Armstrong family.  After his death, his widow Rose married Thomas (Rattling) Gourd, and was known to most people in the Manard community as Granny Gourd.  Dr. Reece and Rose Mathis Reece Gourd are buried at the Citizens Cemetery in Fort Gibson OK.  Thomas Rattling Gourd is buried at the Hendrix Cemetery west of Tahlequah OK.  These journals were made available by the Reece descendants, Jean Monholland, Clara Monholland and Dan Reece.
