Farm Census Enumeration

ANNOUNCE ENUMERATORS FOR CHOCTAW COUNTY
The Southeast Oklahoman January 17, 1935 - transcribed by Ron Henson

    Choctaw county government farm census enumerators this week were announced from McAlister by W.E.B. Leonard, census supervisor for this district.
    Enumerators are Joe Pierce, Henry H. Hutchings and Mrs. J.C. Collins, of Hugo; Mrs. Jessie Barnhart, J.L. Stewart, of Boswell; D.E. Jenner, Wiley Hammock, of Soper; O.C. Allen, Austin Baskin, of Spencerville; Mrs. Hazel Smallwood, of Grant; Tom Lain, of Frogville.
    All enumeration work is to be completed within this month.

First Baptist Church Hugo Pastor

BAPTIST PASTOR AND WIFE ARRIVE
Is Native Oklahoman; Graduate Ouichita College

    Rev. Willard E. White and family arrived in Hugo Wednesday to make their home.
    Rev. White was recently called by the congregation of the First Baptist church here as their pastor. For the past five years he has been pastor of the First Baptist church in Bentonville, Arkansas.
    Rev. White is a native Oklahoman having been born at McCurtain, where he received his early education. He received his degree at Ouichita college, Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
    He entered the ministry at the age of fifteen years and has not been with out a church since that time.
    His wife was Miss DeWitt Ludwick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O.W. Ludwick of Paris, Texas. She is a graduate of the Paris Junior college and Baylor University where she majored in voice and piano.
    For a time she was head of the voice and piano departments for the Missouri Baptist college.
    Since their arrival they have been busily engaged in setting up house keeping but will be "at home" within a short time.
    Rev. and Mrs. White will find a warm welcome to Hugo from the entire citizenship regardless of church affiliation.

November Court Docket 1939

LIQUOR CASES ON COUNTY DOCKET
Next Term Set November 15
The Hugo Daily News October 29, 1939 - transcribed by Ron Henson

    Three liquor cases and three cases involving operation of slot machines will be on the docket when the next term of county court opens here November 15, County Judge T.W. Hunter will preside.
    W.L. (Preacher) Swink is charged in two cases with possession of intoxicating liquors. Gordon Gibson also must face a charge of liquor possession.
    Ralph K. Jenner will be tried on two charges of operating and permitting to be operated slot machines. Mac Flynn Jr. will be tried on a similar charge.
    Judgment and sentence will be passes in the following cases: J.L. Johnson, Mae Wilburn, Bertha Ward, Tom Snow, Bell Turley, Johnnie Wilson, Willie Young, Ransom Pittman and Frank Brouse.

Furniture Store New Owner

A.M. Hughes is Owner Hugo Furniture Co.

    The Rodgers-Wade Furniture Company has this day sold to A.M. Hughes a complete stock of new furniture, according to Harry Ordway, of the Rodgers-Wade Furniture company. Mr. Hughes has leased the building formerly occupied by the Hugo Furniture Company. The Rodgers-Wade Furniture Company is with-drawing from the retail business in this city.
    Mr. Hughes states that his store is now open for business with the same personnel maintained by the Hugo Furniture store. He welcomes customers who may come either to look at his merchandise or to buy. He further adds that he will be glad to sell furniture for cash if you have it or credit if you want it.
    Mr. Hughes' new store will be known as the Hugo Furniture Company, Unine.

1939 Lettermen

Coach Announces Lettermen For 1939

    Lettermen for the 1939 football season were announced today by Coach Simon Parker. Class A lettermen include the following:
    Kenneth McDowell, Ralph Ellis, Raymond Little, R.J. Brown, Billie Moore, Wayland Nash, Leroy Bedford, W.M. White, Paul Clinkenbeard, Billie Ross, Goran Campbell, Wilbur Phillips, Gene Powell, Billy Walden, Ralph Berryhill, James Dawkins, Isaac Simpson, Clifford Jones and Edlridge Locke.
    Class B lettermen include Max Norwood, James Little, Ben Hicks, Melvin Pulliam, Rodney Collins, J.R. James, Vernon Locke, Ed Fooshee, Billy Hawkins, Billy Marks and Roy Parker.

House Fire

H.E. Colvin Home Damaged By Fire
The Hugo Daily News December 11, 1939 - transcribed by Ron Henson

    A house belonging to H.E. Colvin at 809 South K street was considerably damaged by fire caused by a faulty kitchen flue about 1:30 o'clock, according to Firechief Clyde Garrison.
    Damage was estimated at $800 with the loss partially covered by insurance. No one was at home at the time of the fire.
    Household belongings were saved, but were badly damaged by water and smoke.

Meredith Verdict

FOUND GUILTY ON THREE COUNTS
The Jury in Meredith Trial Reaches Verdict at Midnight
The Soper Herald October 29, 1908 - transcribed by Ron Henson

    The Meredith trial, which has been holding the boards in the district court since October 12 came to a close Thursday afternoon, when it was given to [transcriber's note: this is how the paragraph reads]
    The court appointed H.H. Wood of Boswell foreman and a verdict was reached that night about 12 o'clock, finding the defendant guilty on three counts, as follows:
    Failing to discharge a deputy, John Threlkeld, for acts unbecoming an officer; failure to serve certain subpeonas [sic] on Oliver Wright for violating prohibition law; for not suspending Frank Schultz for hanging a negroe [sic] prisioner [sic] up by the hands for stealing whiskey, after a reasonable length of time.
    The jury failed to find the defense guilty of sixteen other charges, among which were criminal intimacy with Dora Neagle and fraudulenty [sic] obtaining money from the county.
    The attorney for the defense is preparing a motion for a new trial, and if it is overruled the case will be appealed to higher courts, which will be requested to set aside Judge Richarbson's [sic] order suspending Meredith from office and that he be returned to his office. The motion will be made on the small finding of the jury.
    The trial has been long and bitter and it is hoped by all that it will be settled in some shape satisfactory to the public as it is not only creating factions on both sides, but is putting the county to an enormous exspense [sic].

Gene Henson Injured

Henson Boy Injured When Car Turns Over
The Hugo Daily News July 28, 1946 - transcribed by Ron Henson

    Gene Henson, son of Mr. and Mrs Joe Henson, suffered head injuries and was rendered unconscious when the Army surplus car he was driving turned over several times near the Shoat Springs school house about 9:45 p.m. Friday.
    A Coffey ambulance rushed him to Johnson Hospital where it was reported by Dr. Floyd Waters that he was still unconscious at 2 p.m. Saturday.
    Witnesses to the accident said that the car turned crossways in the road and turned several flips.

Henson Boy Improves Considerably Sunday
The Hugo Daily News July 29, 1946 - transcribed by Ron Henson

    The condition of young Gene Henson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Henson of the Shoat Springs community who was injured when his Army surplus car overturned with him Friday night, was reported as "much improved" Monday.
    His physician, Dr. Floyd Waters, said that young Henson regained partial consciousness Saturday night and full consciousness Sunday and has improved steadily at Johnson hospital.

Joe Devers Fined

Man Fined $124.70 By County Judge
The Hugo Daily News July 29, 1946 - transcribed by Ron Henson

    On charges of driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor, Joe Devers of Hugo was fined a total of $124.70 Saturday in county court, Judge E.D. Ellis reported Monday.
    Devers was apprehended south of town Friday night by Constable Carroll Loftin.
