Mrs. Joel Spring's Residence Burns
SPRINGS RESIDENCE BURNED YESTERDAY
The Hugo Daily Husonian December 23, 1915 - transcribed by Ron Henson
The residence of Mrs. Joel Spring on South Third street caught fire Wednesday afternoon and was almost destroyed. The fire started about four o'clock in the afternoon near the roof and, on account of the high wind blowing, spread quickly over the roof. By the time the fire department arrived the upper floor was also in flames. A large crowd of men entered the house and removed practically all of the down stairs furniture and fixtures. It was impossible to go up stairs. Henry Spring was the only member of the family who roomed there and his was a heavy personal loss. By five o'clock the flames were extinguished but only the shell of former place remained.
The home consisted of nine rooms, hall and bath. It was the first two story residence built in Hugo and was constructed by Joel Spring, the most prominent early citizen in Hugo, in the winter of 1902. The loss was estimated this morning to be about $3500. The insurance carried upon it amounted to $2500.
Some very valuable oil paintings, bought by Mr. Spring, was saved from the flames. One of these paintings, by F. Miller, picturing a violin Mr. Spring paid $700.
Mrs. Spring will probably rebuild in the spring.
