Mrs. Carrie Self
(2 obits)
MRS. CARRIE SELF DIED SATURDAY
The Hugo Daily Husonian June 20, 1915 -
transcribed by Ron Henson
Mrs. Carrie Self died at the home of her son, Tom, eight miles north-west of Hugo, Saturday morning at 10:20 o'clock.
Mrs. Self has been ill with pneumonia for several months and at her advanced age could not withstand the ravages of the fever. Her death came quietly with part of her children at her bedside. She was born seventy four years ago in Missouri, where she lived until early girlhood when she removed to Texas. There she married W.C. Self and came with her husband to Indian Territory thirty years ago. For twenty three years she lived five miles east of Hugo when this was indeed a sparsely settled county. She next moved to a cattle ranch of Mr. Self's in Pushmataha county where her husband died January 8, 1913. Since then she has made her home with her children in this county.
She was the mother of eight children of which five are living. They are: Tom, Doss Doc, George, who lives in Pushmataha county, and Mrs. Will Spring. Mrs. Self was a woman of strong character and had the respect of all who knew her. She was typical of the study pioneer type that have done so much to settle the United States. Her family has long been one of the most prominent in this section. She has always been a devout member of the Baptist church.
The funeral will be held at the home of her son, Tom, and burial will follow in the Billy Spring cemetery just south of town on the Grant east road.
MRS. SELF'S FUNERAL
Services Held at the Grave in Billy Spring Cemetery
The Hugo Daily Husonian June 21, 1915 -
transcribed by Ron Henson
The funeral services over the remains of Mrs. Carrie Self who died Saturday morning were held Sunday afternoon at the side of the grave in the Billy Spring private cemetery just south of town. No services were held at the residence. The funeral procession drove from the home of Tom Self to the cemetery at 2:30 in the afternoon. The services was pronounced by the Rev. A.S. Wells, of the First Baptist church.
Due to a few slight incorrections in dates and locations in the account of Mrs. Self's death and life in Sunday's Husonian the following is given:
Carrie Baxter was born in Chattanooga, Georgia, Sept. 4, 1842. She moved from Georgia to Missouri in 1858. From Missouri she moved to Doaksville, Indian Territory in 1863. From Doakesville she moved to Honey Grove, Texas, where she was until 1885 when she returned to the territory. She was married to W.C. Self in 1867. To this union were born ten children, two daughters and eight sons. One daughter and four sons have died.
E.G. Baxter, a brother and Mrs. R.C. Freeny, a sister, both of Caddo, Okla., were here for the funeral. A large number of friends attended the burial.
