Hugo Band Wins High Ratings

Bandsmen Win High Ratings At Durant Contest
Hugo high school and junior high school
musicians walked off with 10 ratings of superior -- the highest rating possible
-- at the district instrumental contest in Durant Friday and Saturday.
They also won 12 ratings of excellent -- the next to highest
rating possible -- and several others won ratings of good.
The musicians who rated superior earned the right to compete
in the state contest in April. The state high school contest will be at
Stillwater April 18 19. The junior high contest will be at Chickasha April 20.
The high school band won an excellent rating in both concert
and sight reading as a group. "We barely missed a superior rating."
director Alvis Rogers said today.
Following the the ratings won by the Hugo musicians.
HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION
Superior -- Vennis Wren, french horn; Ronnie Beasley,
baritone; Jerry Mathis, bass; Clarence Robison, bass; drum quintet of Joey
Brindley, Hal Ellis, Ann Lyan Eddleman, Jackie Garrett and Paul Emert.
Excellent -- Hugo band in both concert and sight reading;
Jimmy Askew, cornet; Sidney Smith, bass; flute quartet of Susan White, Ann
Hacker, Frances Anderson and Annie Askew; saxaphone quartet of Barbara Miller,
Lynn Ann Aikin, Suzanne Hanna and Clayd Lacy; mixed clarinet quartet of Nekia
Partin, Barbara Brindley, Phyllis Clancy and Carol Campbell.
Good -- Robert Butler, trombone; woodwin quintet of Pat
McDonel, Susan Ford, Andrea Bright, Judy Webb and Johnny George; french horn
quartet of Vennis Wren, Judy Webb, Sue Wells and Frankie Bone; brass sextet of
Dewayne Norris, Jimmy Askew, Vennie Wren, Ronnie Beasley, Jim Casteleman and
Jerry Mathis.
JUNIOR HIGH DIVISION
Superior -- Andy Hall, alto clarinet; Robbie George, french
horn; Hal Ellis, drum; flute trio of Cynthia Woolsey, Annie Askew and Karen
Fountain.
Excellent -- Jamie Cobb, cornet, Johnson Cobb, trombone;
Charles Garrett, baritone; clarinet trio of Wylie Napier, Joan Faulkenberry, and
Martha Prater.
Good -- Royce Williamson, cornet; Ted Eudy, cornet; Douglas
Booth, french horn; Paul Emert, drum; trumpet trio of Royce Williamson, Ted Eudy,
Jamie Cobb and Ricky Hill; brass quartet of Pat Fry, Janice Cherry, Charles
Garrett and Mike Simpson.
HHS Musicians Win Honors At State Contest

Hugo High School musicians won several
high ratings at the annual state instrumental music contest in Stillwater
Wednesday and Thursday.
Vennis Wren won a superior rating with his french horn solo.
He was accompanied on the piano by Miss Andrea Bright.
Excellent ratings were won by Ronnie Beasley, baritone solo,
accompanied by Miss Ann Hacker; Clarence Robison, bass solo, accompanied by Miss
Jan Hacker; and a drum quintet composed of Joey Brindley, Anny Lynn Edleman, Hal
Ellis, Jackie Garrett and Paul Emert.
Jerry Mathis won a good rating with his bass solo. He was
accompanied on the piano by Miss Linda Nesbit.
