Ballard Co-A 47 Infantry 9th Division Nov 8, 1942 - The first American flag to go up on the African shore was carried there by a young first sergeant from Ft Towson - Earl E. Ballard. It marked the first invasion of Africa. For the next 3 years, he fought his way through Africa Sicily. He made the Normandy invasion and was in the famous battle of the Bulge, also the Korean War. He was awarded 2 Bronze Stars, 2 Purple Hearts, Combat infantry Badge, Numerous other commendations and medal's during his 24 years in the US Army |
