Ben Bruton

Memorial services for Ben Bruton of Hugo were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, August 23, 2005, at First Baptist Church in Hugo with Rev. Doug McClure officiating. Mr. Bruton died August 19, 2005, at Paris Regional Medical Center in Paris, Texas. He was 73. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Sgt. He was of the Baptist faith.

Ben was born September 9, 1931 in Tina, Texas, the son of Ben and Mamie Bruton and had lived for the past year in Hugo moving here from Lakeside, Calif. where he had lived for over 40 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two siblings.

Ben enjoyed the cowboy life, roped calves, steers, bulldogged, team roped, produced rodeos, announced rodeos, produced the El Capitan Lakeside Rodeo for 40 years, four time winner of the IPRA rodeo of the Year, IPRA Gold Card Member, Reserve World Champion Team Roping Heeler in the IPRA and was the owner of the IPRA Bucking Horse of the Year.

He owned and operated Cowboy’s Corner Western Store in Lakeside, Calif. for 11 years. In 1987, he was Grand Marshal of the Lakeside Rodeo Parade. He was also a member of the El Capitan High School Hall of Fame by being honored with the Lakeside Citizen of the Year award.

He and his wife, Jody, were married on July 14, 1991 in Lake Tahoe, Calif.

SURVIVING RELATIVES: His wife, Jody Bruton; one son, Michael Ben Bruton of Albuquerque, N.M., three daughters, Diane Molina of San Francisco, Calif., Sandra Kay Wheeler of San Diego, Calif., and Frankie Totten of Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister, Jacque Crone of Yuma, Ariz., one brother, Pete Bruton of San Marcos, Calif., four grandchildren, three great grandchildren along with numerous other relatives and friends, including special friends, Cheyenne and Doris Pipkin of Hugo.
