Little Lennie Dennis
The Soper Democrat July 10, 1919 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Lennie Abby Lucille Dennis, 16 months old daughter of Mr. And Mrs. R.J. Dennis of Kent, died Tuesday night about 9 o’clock. Death was due to dysentery. She had been sick about 10 days. Burial was had in the Sugar Creek cemetery, yesterday afternoon.
Death of W.J. Chapman
The Soper Democrat March 20, 1919 – transcribed by Ron Henson
W.J. Chapman, aged 62 years, died at his home 3 ½ miles northeast of Soper, on the A.A. Ferguson place, last Sunday afternoon at six oclock [sic]. Burial was had in the Soper cemetery Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Death was due to the aftereffects of influenza.
Mr. Chapman had only lived in this section about a year, coming here with his family from Ringling, Okla. Besides a wife he leaves seven children, all grown, viz: T.W. Chapman, Soper; Mrs. J.T. Bain, Ft. Worth, Texas; Mrs. Minnie Hamilton, Soper; Mrs. Cloid Sowell, Ringling; Hayden Chapman, Soper; G.W. Chapman, with 90th Division, Germany; and Miss Grace Chapman, Soper.
Mr. Chapman was a good man and will be greatly missed by relatives and friends.

Death of Mrs. J.E. Walker
The Soper Democrat February 27, 1919 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Mrs. Essie Walker, wife of J.E. Walker, died at the family home at El Paso, Tex., last Thursday night, at 7:45 o’clock. Death was due to pulmonary tuberculosis. The remains were shipped to Soper, her former home, arriving here Sunday afternoon at 3:13 o’clock. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Monday at noon. Rev. S.L. Holloway, of Hugo, conducting the services, after which the remains were tenderly laid away in the City Cemetery.
Mrs. Essie Atkins Walker, was 32 years and 25 days of age, and was the eldest daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Jasper L. Atkins, of Soper. At the age of 18 years she was married to J.E. Walker, of Soper, and to the union two children were born: Inez, age 10 years, and L.J., age 4 years. Besides her husband and parents, she leaves one sister, Mrs. E.C. Steen, at Hugo. Mrs. Walker was born at Dardenelle, Ark., and moved with her parents to Soper when she was quite young and has lived here for many years. A year or two ago she moved to New Mexico in hopes of benefiting her health, and for a while improved. A few weeks ago she grew worse and all that medical skill and loving hands could do was done but to no avail. She had been a consistent member of the Baptist church since she was 15 years of age, and was a loving wife, a good mother and true friend. She will be greatly missed.
The entire sympathy of all Soper goes out to the bereaved ones.

The Soper Democrat February 20, 1919 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Wilson Walker, son of G.W. Walker, died at Hugo last Monday morning after a lingering illness. Burial was had in the Crowder cemetery Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o’clock, funeral services being conducted by Rev. M.A. Pillars, of Nelson.
Mr. Walker was between 40 and 50 years of age and never married. He was born and raised in this country, being a member of the Choctaws. He was an honored citizen and will be greatly missed by his many relatives and friends. Several years ago he was stricken with locomotor staxia [sic], of which he never recovered.
Death of Mrs. Sinia Thompson
The Soper Democrat January 30, 1919 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Mrs. Sinia Thompson died at her home near Nelson, Monday night of last week. Burial was had at Sugar Creek cemetery Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Thompson was about 70 years of age and was one of the old settlers of that community. She was a good woman and will be greatly missed by her large number of acquaintances. She leaves five children, viz: Mrs. R.A. Woods, Mrs. Ed Pierce, Miss Ella Thompson, Bud and L.W. Thompson, all of Nelson.
The Soper Democrat September 5, 1918 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Virgil Fuller, age 18 years, died at Hot Springs, Ark., last Wednesday. The body was shipped to Soper, his former home, and burial was had in the Soper cemetery Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Services were conducted by Rev. J.W. Shockley. His brother, Irvin, who is in training at Camp Cody, arrived to attend the funeral.
First Choctaw County Boy to Fall in France
The Soper Democrat September 5, 1918 – transcribed by Ron Henson
The first Choctaw County soldier to make the supreme sacrifice for liberty and humanity was J.C. Coker who lived a few miles north of Soper. Last week Mrs. Coker received a message stating that her husband had been killed in action in France. The official announcement came in the list of casualties Tuesday.
The Soper Democrat January 17, 1918 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Mrs. S.J. Kelly, age 68 years, died at Forney on Jan. 8th. Burial was had at the Soper cemetery on the 9th. Pneumonia was given as the cause of her death. She is survived by a brother, S.B. Kelly, of Forney, and a brother living in Hopkins County, Texas.
The Soper Democrat January 17, 1918 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Word was received here this week of the death of W.A. Austin, which occured [sic] at a hospital at Sherman, Texas, Sunday afternoon at 1:30. G.Y. Austin and daughters, Misses Ruby and Inez, and Mr. And Mrs. S.R. Nabors left that day, to accompany the remains. Mr. Austin lived at Bromide but his remains were buried at Wapunucka. A few years ago he had business interests here and made many friends, who will be grieved to learn of his death.

L.W. Hicks received a telegram Sunday bearing the sad intelligence of the death of his mother, Mrs. R.L. Hicks, at Spartanburg, N.C. Mrs. Hicks was about 60 years of age and had been in failing health for quite awhile. She was a sister of W.C. Burton, who lives a few miles north of town. The entire community deeply sympathizes with them in the loss of their dear mother and sister.

J.M. Beavers, age 65 years, died at his home at Nelson yesterday morning and was buried in Sugar Creek cemetery yesterday afternoon. Death was due to tuberculosis. He leaves a wife and family.
Dr. W.W. Griffith Dies at Norman
The Choctaw Herald April 27, 1911 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Dr. W.W. Griffith died at the state hospital at Norman Tuesday morning at the age of [unreadable]. He was sent there some months ago from this city, his advanced age having affected his mind. He was quite well known in the city and county and was one of the city’s best citizens. The remains arrived here yesterday and were buried at Mount Olive [transcriber’s note: probably should be Mount Olivet] cemetery under the auspices of the local lodge of Odd Fellows.
