The Boswell News May 28, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson
William Morris Hicks was born in Jefferson county, Missouri, March 15, 1864 and died at Boswell May 21, 1937.
He professed faith in Christ about 40 years ago. He was an ordained Nazarene preacher and preached until a few years ago.
He was preceded in death by two girls and a boy.
Surviving relatives are his wife and daughter, Helen Hicks of Boswell; a son-in-law, Arch Selby and two grandchildren; also a brother, Tom Hicks of Dove Creek, Colorado.
Funeral services were conducted at the Nazarene Church Saturday morning by Rev. A.E. Green assisted by W.A. Washburn, with burial in Boswell cemetery.
C.D. Potts Passes Away

C.D. (Curt) Potts was born in Calhoun County, Miss., October 1, 1899 and died June 3, 1937.
He was married to Miss Lillie Hall when he was 19 years old. He moved to VanZant county, Texas, and lived one year moving from their [sic] to Boswell and has lived here since.
Mr. Potts joined the Oak Ridge Baptist church in 1922.
He was left two years ago with five little children, three boys and two girls, and he was faithful daddy and mother too.
He was a neat housekeeper and nice hand to sew and a real good cook. Anything he liked was to cook something good. He was living with his father and mother and his mother has been in poor health for the past year.
Mr. Potts went to a Hugo hospital in March and stayed three weeks. Came home and relapsed and was taken back and stayed two weeks. He had only been from the hospital six days.
On the evening of his death he patched two pairs of overalls for his little boys, ate him something and told his mother he was going see how they were getting along hoeing. While he was eating his dear old mother kissed him and hugged his neck. When he finished eating he came by where his mother was sitting and hugged and kissed her and said; "Mother I’m going to see where the kids are hoeing. I’ll be back after a while." And was there when the Master said come. Mr. Potts said there was nothing in the way and he didn’t care for dying only he hated to leave his children.
Mr. Potts had only been in the field a few minutes and had said a few words when he took a hemorrhage of lungs. It wasn’t but a few minutes until help came but could do nothing.

Mrs. Annie Belle Boaz Mahan was born Nov. 26, 1885 at Caviness, Texas, and died at Boswell May 28, 1937.
In 1908 she was married to Geo. Mahan and to this union two children were born.
She professed religion early in life and united with the Methodist church.
Moved to Boswell in 1917 and has been a resident of this section ever since.
She is survived by one daughter Mrs. Lela Latham of Boswell; a son, Cleabern Mahan of Powderly, Texas; one grandchild, six sisters, Mrs. Dovie Carlock, Paris, Tex.; Mrs. Evie Upchurch, Windom, Tex.; Mrs. May Ainsworth, Jewett, Texas; Mrs. Willie Garrett, Lake City, Ark.; Mrs. Beaulah Holding, Caviness, Tex.; Mrs. Avis Ricks of Paris, Texas; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted by J.G. Patterson at the Boswell cemetery Saturday afternoon, May 29, with Coffey-Campbell Funeral home of Hugo in charge of funeral arrangements.
Good Woman Gone To Rest

Mrs. J.W. Wilson, who had been a sufferer for the past two years, living at Mayhew 3 ˝ miles northwest of Boswell, was called to her reward Monday morning, May 31, 1937 at 8:15.
Mrs. Mamie Wilson was born in Hot Springs County, Arkansas, January 23, 1884 and was 53 years, 4 months and 8 days old at the time of her death.
She was married to J.W. Wilson September 15, 1908 and to this union three children were born, one boy and two girls.
Surviving relatives are her husband; one son, Ernest Wilson; two daughter [sic], Dorthy and Betty Jean Wilson; one daughter by former marriage, Mrs. Arch Thompson; two step-daughters, Mrs. Daisy Fink of Indianola, Okla.; and Mrs. Rosa Hipp of Warren, Ark.; one step-son, J.T. (Tump) Wilson; two sisters and two brothers; three grandchildren a host of friends, as her friends were numbered by her acquaintances.
She professed faith in Christ and united with the Baptist church about 30 years ago in Arkansas, and departed this life with the statement that she was ready and prepared to go; just waiting for the Lord to come and take her home, and with that hope she bore her afflictions patiently. Surely, a good woman has gone to rest, to await her rewards that the Lord will give her in that Great Day. Her kind and affectionate life will be missed in her home and community, but she will live on and on in the hearts and minds of her loved ones and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Boswell Monday afternoon by Rev. W.W. Moran, assisted by Rev. W.A. Washburn, pastor of the church after which the body was laid to rest in the Boswell cemetry [sic] with Woodruff-Jones of Antlers in charge.
The Boswell News July 23, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Herman Lee Taylor was born May 16th, 1934, and
died July 21, 1937, at his home in the Mayhew community. He was ill only eight
days with infantile paralysis.
Surviving relatives are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur
Taylor; one sister Hazel Taylor, five months old; grandparents Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Taylor, of Boswell, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Simpson of Atoka, several uncles and
aunts and other relatives and friends.
Passing of a Prominent Boswell Citizen

Jessie Rice died December 25 at 9 p.m. at his home about six miles northeast of town after an illness of only five days of pneumonia.
Mr. Rice was born near Jackson, Okla., May 17, 1902 and was 35 years, 7 months and 8 days old at the time of his death.
He had lived in and around Boswell most of his life where he has many friends.
Surviving relatives are his wife and four children, one sister, Mrs. Fannie Polson of Pooli, Okla., two brothers, John Rice north of town and Lewis Rice south of town.

The Boswell News December 31, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Funeral services were held at the Boswell cemetery last Thursday afternoon by Rev. W.W. Moran for Mrs. Elizabeth Davis, who passed away at her daughter’s home in Ada December 22 after a brief illness from a stroke of paralysis which occurred Friday the 17th.
Mrs. Elizabeth Davis was born in Hempstead County, Arkansas, September 8, 1850 and was 87 years, 3 months and 14 days old at the time of her death.
She was married to Jim Davis some 65 years ago, and to this union 12 children were born 3 boys and 9 girls. Mr. Davis died in March, 1923, at which time they were living a few miles south of town and was buried in Boswell cemetery. Also nine children preceded her in death leaving only one son, Sam Davis of Atoka, Okla., and two daughters, Mrs. Laura Carter of Ada, Okla., and May Bird of Arizona and several grandchildren as survivors.
Mrs. Davis professed faith in Christ when about 20 years old and united with the Christian church and was faithful in discharging her Christian duty in her home and community wherever she lived, truly rendering service for her Master. Indeed a woman like that will be missed in the homes of her loved ones and friends.
Choctaw County Citizen For 35 Years Dies

Funeral services for Charlie H. Holmes, who resided a few miles southwest of Hugo, were conducted Thursday afternoon, December 9 from the Baptist Church by Rev. W.W. Moran assisted by Rev. W.A. Washburn and J.G. Patterson, with Coffey-Campbell Funeral Home in charge of arrangements and burial in Boswell cemetery.
Mr. Holmes died in the Veterans Hospital in Muskogee December 6. He was born in Ladonia, Texas, August 25, 1889 and was 48 years, 3 months and 12 days old.
He came to Boswell in 1902 with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Holmes and resided here until about 14 years ago when he was married to Mrs. May Cain in May, 1923, they having made their home near Hugo.
He is survived by his companion and four step-children, two boys and two girls, and his dear old mother and six sisters.
Mr. Holmes was a carpenter by trade having learned same from his father, and he is remembered by many here as being proficient in his profession. He was a World War veteran serving his country well in her struggle for freedom. He was good natured and peaceful in disposition, kind to his family and neighbors. He told his mother and sister who visited him near the end, that he had made peace with his Savior and was ready to go when the Master called.
Pioneer Woman Died Wednesday Afternoon

Mrs. Ella Porter, 68, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Monroe Mixon in north part of town. Funeral services will be held Thursday. She had been a resident of this vicinity for many years.
Ella Bell Porter
The Boswell News December 10, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Mrs. Ella Bell Porter was born in Fannin County, Texas, August 18, 1869 and died December 1, 1937 at 4:50 o’clock at the age of 68 years, 3 months and 13 days.
She became a Christian early in life but never united with any church. Had lived in and near Boswell for 34 years.
She is survived by two brothers, Walter and John Williams of Boswell; two sisters, mrs. W.B. Fox of Dodd City, Texas, and Mrs. J. Sherrell of Dallas; three children, R.J. Harrill, Forney, Mrs. Oscar Medell, Antlers, Mrs. Monroe Mixon, Boswell; 10 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10 o’clock December 2 at Boswell cemetery by Rev. J.G. Patterson.
Soper Man Dies Tuesday

W.E. Larecy, a very prominent citizen and business man of Soper died Tuesday night in Paris, Texas, after a brief illness. He will be buried Thursday.
Roy H. Fugatt Buried Here Friday

The body of Roy H. Fugatt, who was killed in Oklahoma City, was shipped back here late Thursday night for burial.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon by Rev. W.A. Washburn and interment in Boswell cemetery, with Pitt’s funeral home in charge.
The Boswell News November 5, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Oziah Stowe was born October 18, 1872 and died October 31, 1937, aged 65 years and 13 days.
He is survived by three sons, one daughter, one brother and two sisters. His wife passed away a number of years ago.
Mr. Stowe was well known north of town where he resided a number of years. About three ago [sic] he went to Oklahoma City and lived until last August when he came back to his old community and was making his home with his son when the end came.
Funeral services were held at the Boswell cemetery about noon Modday [sic] by Rev. W.W. Moran where the body was laid to rest.
The Boswell News October 22, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson
Milton Reaves, 81, a former resident of this vicinity, died in Fort Worth, Texas, Friday Oct. 15, and the body arrived here Sunday and was interred in the Boswell cemetery.
Mr. Reaves was a stock farmer while here and lived on the John Armstrong farm.
