Betty Jane Kernell

Young Girl Buried At Springs Chapel
The Hugo Daily News February 4, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Betty Jane Kernell, two year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B.C. Kernell, died at her home southeast of Hugo at three o’clock Wednesday afternoon.
    Funeral services were held at Springs Chapel at 2 o’clock this afternoon with the Rev. Lionel O’Neal in charge.
    She is survived by her parents, and two brothers, C.L. Kernell and Virgil Kernell, and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Wortham of Hugo.
    Interment was in Spring [sic] Chapel cemetery with Coffey-Campbell funeral directors officiating.


D.F. Knowles

Swink Resident Buried Monday
D.F. Knowles Died At Home of Daughter in Blossom, Tex.

    Funeral services for D.F. Knowles were held at the First Baptist church in Blossom, Monday under the direction of the Coffey-Campbell funeral home here.
    Mr. Knowles was a resident of Swink for many years and was well known in Hugo. He died at the home of his daughter Mrs. H.E. Caviness in Blossom Sunday afternoon at six o’clock.
    The family moved from Blossom to Swink many years ago.
    He is survived by two daughters and one son. The daughters are Mrs. A.J. Roddy, Swink, Mrs. Caviness, Blossom, and J.C. Knowles of Falfurias, Texas.


J.H. Pope

Former Resident of Hugo Died Tuesday

    J.H. Pope of Clarksville, Texas, died Tuesday evening at his home after a short illness, it was learned here today.
    Mr. Pope was a former resident of Hugo, and was employed by the Paris Grocery Company.
    Funeral services were held at Clarksville at 2 o’clock.


Mary Bert White

Mary Bert White Fatally Stricken At Church Service
Popular With Younger Set In Hugo And Idabel
The Hugo Daily News February 5, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Death came suddenly Thursday night to Mary Bert White, during a revival meeting at the First Baptist church. She is the 19 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred White.
    Miss White had just walked to the pulpit with her mother to transfer their church letters here from Idabel. As she took the hand of the minister, Rev. W.E. White, she swooned, and never regained consciousness.
    Dr. John and Dr. Harris, who were summoned immediately, pronounced the cause of death to be some form of heart trouble.
    Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon in the First Baptist church, with the Rev. W.E. White officiating. The exact hour had not been announced at press time today. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Mary Bert graduated from Hugo High school last spring. She numbered many of the younger people of Hugo among her friends.
    She was born in Ft. Towson, Feb. 4, 1918.
    Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred White; three sisters, Mrs. Athena Elliot, Hugo, and Freddie and Nancy Lee White; a brother, Corral White, Hugo.

Large Crowd Attends Funeral of Popular Young Lady

    Funeral services for Mary Bert White, who died of an heart attack at a Revival meeting Thursday night, were conducted this afternoon at 2 o’clock in the First Baptist church. Rev. W.E. White, pastor, officiated.
    Pall bearers were selected from among Miss White’s young friends. They were R.J. Burris, Cody Ray, Glen O’Neal, Roscoe Miller, Jack Eddleman, and Boyce Ayles.
    A large crowd of both young and old gathered to witness the rites, many of them journeying with the procession to Mt. Olivet where the body was interred.
    Snow Funeral directors had charge of the services.


George W. Treadway

Funeral Held for Geo. W. Treadway

    Funeral services for George W. Treadway, who died Saturday in his home five miles east of Hugo, were held Sunday afternoon at Springs Chapel.
    Rev. Malcom McFarland preached the funeral. Coffey-Campbell funeral directors were in charge.
    Mr. McFarland [transcriber note: probably should be Treadway] was born in Sulphur Rock, Arkansas, Dec. 26, 1884. He had been a resident of Choctaw county 22 years.
    Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Lillian Treadway and eight children; Rubin, William, Woodrow, J.D., Jewel May, Odell, Monelle, and Jimmie.


Mrs. M.E. Herndon

Funeral Held for Mrs. M.E. Herndon
The Hugo Daily News February 9, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Funeral rites were held this afternoon at 3 o’clock in the First Methodist church for Mrs. M.E. Herndon, who died in El Paso, Texas, Saturday.
    Pall bearers were: Horace Pardue, Gordon Moore, Morris Goldfeder, J.E. Burris, Bob Woodson, and Will Biard.
    The Rev. Ernest Hicks officiated.
    Interment was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, with Coffey-Campbell in charge.


Sarah C. Clark

Pioneer Woman Died Early Mon.
Funeral Services For Mrs. J.L. Clark Held Today
The Hugo Daily News February 8, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Mrs. Sarah Cathering [sic] Clark died at her home, 401 South Fourth street, at 12:15 Sunday morning. Mrs. Clark, a widow of the late Dr. J.L. Clark, had been ill three weeks.
    Funeral services were conducted in the Church of Christ this afternoon at 3 o’clock with the Rev. O.A. Newman in charge.
    Senner Funeral home officiated. Burial took place at Union Grove, east of Paris.
    Mrs. Clark was born in Paris, Texas, the daughter of George T. Riggs, pioneer of Lamar county. She was married to J. Edgar Beaty while a young woman and has one son by this marriage, Frank Beaty of Marshall, Texas.
    She has made her home in Hugo the past several years. Mrs. Clark was a life long member of the Church of Christ. Surviving her is one brother, J. Newton Riggs of Amarillo, Texas, and three sisters, Mrs. C. Roy Wilson, Mrs. Thomas Quinn of Paris, and Mrs. Georgia Patterson of Oklahoma City.


Mrs. W.R. McKinney

Mrs. W.R. McKinney Buried at Ft. Towson

    Funeral services for Mrs. W.R. McKinney were held in Ft. Towson Monday afternoon, after which burial took place in the Ft. Towson cemetery.
    Mrs. McKinney was the aged mother of Sam McKinney, former Ft. Towson banker and well known citizen of Choctaw county.
    The aged mother died in Dallas, Sunday and the remains were brought to Hugo in a Snow ambulance Monday morning.
    Mr. and Mrs. Ben Grave, Mr. and Mrs. Fred heard and several other Hugo relatives and friends attended the funeral.


Edna Bethel Mooney

Edna Bethel Mooney Dies in Sanitarium
The Hugo Daily News February 14, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Edna Bethel Mooney, 27, of Sawyer, died in the Paris Sanitarium Friday night at 9 o’clock.
    Funeral services were conducted at Sawyer Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. by Rev. McFarland.
    Miss Mooney is survived by her father, Sam Mooney, a sister, Cleo, and a brother, Chester.
    Interment was in the Sawyer cemetery with Coffey-Campbell in charge of arrangements.


Charlotte Bennett

Infant Daughter of Roy Bennett Dies
The Hugo Daily News February 14, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Charlotte, the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bennett, died at their home, 807 West Duke early Saturday morning.
    Funeral services were held Saturday at 3 o’clock at the Church of Christ with Rev. Newman officiating.
    Burial took place in Springs Chapel cemetery. Coffey-Campbell had charge.
    She is survived by her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bennett.
    Pall bearers were: Charles Pitts, Clyde Browers, Eldridge Locke, Troy Lee Brawner.


Joe O. Bryant

J.O. Bryant Dies In Paris Hospital
Rev. Hicks to Conduct Services in Sherman Methodist Church

    The death Saturday morning of Joe O. Bryant, 1001 East Kirk street, was a shock to his many friends and business associates. Mr. Bryant died in a Paris hospital at 7:30 Saturday morning.
    Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 at the First Methodist church in Sherman, Texas. Rev. E.C. Hicks will officiate.
    Mr. Bryant was born in Lockney, Texas, December 19, 1900.
    He is survived by his wife and two children, Geraldine and J.O. Jr., in his immediate family and the following: Mother, Mrs. M.G. Bryant; Brothers, W.C. Bryant, L.D. Bryant, Irving Bryant, and Wendell Bryant, all of Fort Worth, Texas; Sister, Mrs. Lovan Rogers, of Fort Worth, Texas.
    Pall bearers are: E.M. Hampton, Jim Dickson, Frank Thompson, Tip Newell, George Fisher, all of Sherman, and C.C. Stevens of Dallas.
    Coffey-Campbell are in charge of arrangements.


George R. Montgomery

G.R. Montgomery Dies At His Home Here Today

    Funeral services were held at three o’clock this afternoon in the Senner Funeral Home Chapel for George R. Montgomery, 62, who died at his residence in Fourth Ward early this morning.
    Rev. McFarland officiated. Interment was in Springs Chapel Cemetery.
    Survivors are: wife, Mrs. Mollie Montgomery; daughters, Mrs. Nora Cooper, Ft. Towson; Mrs. Catherine Emberson, Chicota, Okla.; Mrs. Grace Zuefeldt, Dallas, sons, E.B. Montgomery, Snyder, Joe Montgomery, Hugo; Gene Montgomery, Phoenix, Aix. [sic]


Isham Williams

Isham Williams Dies Saturday
Pneumonia Attack Is Fatal To Aged Choctaw Indian
The Hugo Daily News March 7, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Funeral services for Isham Williams, who died of pneumonia Saturday, will be held in the Methodist Protestant church Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, it has been announced.
    Mr. Williams, was born March 25, 1855 in the Indian territory. While a boy of 12 he went to Texas to pick cotton and was adopted and educated by a Mr. Patterson for whom he worked, returning at the age of 20 to this county.
    He is survived by two sons, George Williams, Tulsa, and W.A. Williams, Hugo, and a number of grandchildren and other relatives.
    Interment will be in Springs chapel cemetery with Snow Funeral directors in charge.


Arthur A. Fodge

Fort Towson Resident To Be Buried Tuesday
The Hugo Daily News March 8, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Funeral services for Arthur A. Fodge, 60, who died at Ft. Towson Saturday night, will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 in the Baptist church at Ft. Towson with Rev. G.R. Naylor officiating.
    Interment will be in the Ft. Towson cemetery with Senner Funeral home in charge.
    Survivors are his wife, Gertrude; three sons, William, Travis and Tommy; and five daughters, Mrs. Ruby Petty, Boulder City,  Nevada, Mrs. Ora Swarts, Chickasha, Mrs. Carrie Gates Oklahoma City, Miss Montez and Theda Fodge of Ft. Towson.
    Other survivors include his mother, Mrs. J.N. Fodge, of Ft. Towson, a brother, Marvin of Ft. Towson, and two sisters, Mrs. Daisy Franks of Hamilton City, Calif., and Minnie Pickard of Carnegie, Okla.


Mrs. John Crane

Funeral Held For Mrs. John Crane

    Funeral services for Mrs. John Crane were held Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist church with Rev. W.E. White officiating.
    Mrs. Crane died Saturday after an illness of several weeks duration.
    Pall bearers were: Ben Dean, J. Lee Rodgers, Gordon Wilkins, Bob Jones, Guy Burris and Aubrey Tyus.
    Surviving Mrs. Crane are: two sons, Si [sic] Crane, Kilgore, Texas; Harold Crane, Oklahoma City, a daughter, Mrs. Alva Shaw, Phoenix, Ariz.; sister, Mrs. H.V. Edwards, Paris; brothers, Frank Reed, Paris; M.E. Reed, Waxahachie, Texas; H.M. Reed, Denison, Texas; and four grandsons, Bert Crane, Marvin Crane, Wilbur Denn Herndon and Donald Herndon.
    The deceased was buried in Mt. Olivet with Snow Funeral directors in charge.


Troy Lee Sims

Small Boy Buried At Goodland Saturday

    Funeral services were held at 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon for Troy Lee Sims, two year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Sims, Rt. 1, Hugo.
    The services were conducted at Goodland, it was reported although information as to who officiated was not revealed to The News. Snow Funeral home had charge of the burial.


Willie Gertrude Petty

Mrs. R.L. Petty Dies Of Pneumonia
Funeral Services To Be Held At the Home East of Hugo
The Hugo Daily News March 7, 1937 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Funeral services for Mrs. R.L. Petty will be held at the home four miles east of Hugo at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon under the direction of Coffey-Campbell Funeral home, after which burial will take place in Mt. Olivet.
    Mrs. Willie Gertrude Petty was born in Benton, Kentucky, June 23, 1870. She and Mr. Petty were united in marriage in Clarksville, Texas, in 1894. They moved to Hugo in 1908 and have resided in and around Hugo since that time.
    She has been ill with pneumonia for the past several weeks but was believed to be recovering until a sudden turn for the worse took place and death came at 1:05 Saturday afternoon.
    Mrs. Petty was a devout church worker and during her long residence in this community she had made many friends all of whom deeply regret her passing.
