Mrs. R.H. Sweat

Mrs. R.H. Sweat Dies at Home

    Mrs. R.H. Sweat, pioneer Hugo resident, died at the family home on East Jefferson at noon Monday following an illness of several years.
    She and her husband, the late R.H. Sweat, came to Hugo more than thirty years ago.
    She is survived by the following children, Mrs. C.B. Harris and Mrs. Agnes Stewart, Paris, Texas, Miss Emma Sweat, Fayetteville, Ark. And Mrs. Tip Shelton, Miss Bill Sweat and A.L. Sweat of Hugo.
    Funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time according to an announcement from the Coffey Funeral home who will have charge of arrangements.
    Mrs. Sweat had been a member of the First Presbyterian church here and was an active member until her health failed.


Herbert S. Gore

Herbert S. Gore Died Friday;

    Funeral services for Herbert S. Gore was held in the First Baptist church this afternoon at 5:00 with Dr. J.D. Murrell officiating and the Campbell Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet.
    Herbert S. Gore was born in Greenville, Texas on July 11, 1890, and grew to manhood there. He died suddenly at his home 511 South Third street at seven o’clock Friday afternoon. He had been ailing for several weeks but was not thought to be seriously ill. He did his usual work as switch man for the Frisco Friday and had finished the evening meal and was looking over the rose garden at his home when death came.
    He was married on November 18, 1912 to Miss Ella Clay at Greenville and they moved to Hugo and established their home the following month. He entered the service of the Frisco as a switchman and was so engaged at the time of his death.
    He was president of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, Hugo Lodge 702 and had been active in the brotherhood for many years.
    He is survived by his wife, Ella Gore, and two sons, Royce Herbert Gore, of Dallas and Kenneth Lee Gore now with the Merchant Marines. Mrs. Royce Gore will be unable to attend the funeral services on account of the serious illness of her mother.
    He is also survived by the following sister and brothers, Mrs. Agnes Stewart, Hobbs, New Mexico, Rev. Oscar Gore, Newport, Va. And Rev. E.E. Gore and Ed Gore, of Gainesville, Texas, O.E. Gore, Glennwood, Miss and M.C. Gore whose address is unknown. A nephew, J.T. Stewart of Antlers also survives.
    Bearers was Jim Norris, Wade McClure, Ben Grady, Jim Finney, Grover Garrison, and Glenn McDaniel.
    Hub Gore, as he was known to his friends, had made many friends both in and out of railroad circles during the many years he had resided in Hugo and they all join with the News in extending condolence to the bereaved family.


Mrs. Jessie Legate

Mrs. R.M. Legate Died Wednesday

    Mrs. Jessie Legate, 75, wife of Mr. R.M. Legate passed away at their home, 1201 S. K at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, following a long illness.
    Funeral arrangements are being handled by Coffey Funeral Home and a short service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday in the Coffey Chapel with Rev. K.M. Kelly, Pastor of the Church of Christ officiating. Interment will be at 4:00 p.m. Friday in the Rockford Cemetery, four miles south of Biardstown, Texas.
    Born March 4th, 1873 in Lamar County, Texas near Biardstown, Miss Jessie Goins married Robert Mack Legate June 11, 1893. In 1920 they moved near Soper, Oklahoma and had lived in Hugo for the past four years.
    She is survived by her husband, four daughters, Mrs. Walter Douglas, and Mrs. A.H. Ferguson, of Hugo, Mrs. Roy Bolton and Mrs. Bill Jamar, Paris, Texas, 18 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.
    Also surviving are a brother, Billy Goins, Paris, a sister, Mrs. S.C. Hamby, Hugo, a half-brother Oscar Nance, Paris, and a half-sister Mrs. Tom King, Paris.
    Pall bearers will be chosen from Soper, and their names were not yet known at press time.


Carol Tippit

Mrs. Tippit Died Early Sunday

    Mrs. Carol Tippit died in a Dallas, Texas hospital at 3:00 a.m. Sunday as a result of an automobile accident that occured [sic] on May 16 when the car in which she and her husband, son of Mr. And Mrs. R.H. Tippit of Hugo, were riding.
    Mr. Tippit was also injured but is thought to be recovering. Their car was struck by a man named Webster who was injured and is still in a hospital.


Jonnie Munroe

Spencerville Early Resident Died Sat.

    Mr. Jonnie Munroe, 53, of Spencerville, Okla., died in his home at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
    Born in Texas November 29, 1894, Mr. Munroe had lived in Spencerville 45 years. He was a farmer, a member of the Baptist Church and a World War I veteran.
    Funeral services were held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Spencerville Cemetery, with Rev. Pate of Antlers officiating.
    Coffey Funeral home is handling the arrangements.
    Mr. Munroe is survived by his wife, Mrs. Addie Munroe, four sons, Fred Munroe, Snow, Okla., Frank Munroe, U.S. Army in Washington state, Elton Munroe and Jonnie Jr. of Spencerville, and one grandchild.
    Also surviving are his parents, Mr. And Mrs Steve Munroe, address not given, two brothers, Theodore and Floyd of Tahachapi, Cal., and three sisters, Mrs. Senna Seymour, Corinne, Okla., Mrs. Nettie Langley, Deter, N.M., and Mrs. Odie Jack, Atoka.


Virginia Lee Roberts

Goodland Hischool [sic] Girl Died Friday

    Virginia Lee Roberts, 16, of Boswell, Okla., passed away at Goodland School Friday, May 21st.
    She was a member of the Presbyterian church.
    Funeral services was held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Good Springs Cemetery southwest of Boswell. In charge of the service will be Rev. Simon Belvin and Rev. Oscar Gardner, both of Goodland School.
    Coffey Funeral home is handling arrangements.
    Miss Roberts is survived by her parents, Mr. And Mrs. Thomas Roberts, and six sisters, Juanita, Naomi, Susan, Rachel, Bernice, and Joan, all of Boswell.

    Funeral services for Mr. F.G. Prat [sic] was held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist church with the Rev. Edwin Crawford, assistant pastor from the Paris, Baptist church officiating.
    Bearers will be Horace Pardue, Dean Weaver, Homer Coggins, Taft Butler, Willie Patterson and B.A. Vineyard.


William Snelgrove

Spencerville Man Died Saturday Nite

    Mr. William Snelgrove, 86, of Spencerville passed away in his home at Spencerville Saturday night.
    Mr. Snelgrove was born in Green Forest, Ark., January 15, 1861.
    Funeral services were in the Spencerville School house Monday at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Pate of Antlers officiating. Coffey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
    Interment was in Spencerville.
    Mr. Snelgrove is survived by his wife Mrs. Kate Snelgrove and two sons, J.J. Snelgrove, Wichita Falls, Texas and J.H. Snelgrove of Sawyer.


J.V. Grant

J.V. Grant Was Buried Saturday

    Mr. J.V. (Jet) Grant, Ervin Route, Hugo, 64, died in the Paris Sanitarium Friday morning at 11:38 a.m. after a long illness. He had been in the sanitarium for the past two weeks.
    Born in Deport, Texas, August 5, 1883, Mr. Grant moved to his former address 45 years ago. Aug. 7, 1910 he married Miss Mildred Chambless who survives him.
    Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, with Rev. Littleton Fowler officiating, assisted by Rev. C.A. Booth. Bearers were Loftin Brown, Woodrow Brown, Morris Ford, Newton Webb, Ray Grant and Jet Grant all nephews of the deceased.
    He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Jettye Fern Grant and Mrs. Stanley Hall, Berkeley, Cal., his father, James W. Grant, Ervin Rt., Hugo, one brother, S. Ed Grat, same address and six sisters Mrs. Cleora Oakes, Hugo, Miss Nita Grant, Deport, Texas, Mrs. Alex Dolph, Antlers, Mrs. B.E. Nobles, Hugo, Mrs. N.D. Webb, Dallas and Mrs. Alf Ray Weinert, Texas.

Mr. J.V. Grant Died in Paris

    Senner Funeral Home has announced today that Mr. J.V. Grant of Frogville died about 12:30 today in a Paris, Texas, Hospital.
    Funeral arrangements will be made and announced in a later edition of the News.


Mary Elida McCandless

Mrs. McCandless Funeral Friday

    Mrs. Mary Elida McCandless, 71, passed away in her home at 401 N. F this morning at 9:40 a.m.
    Born January 11, 1877 in Gadsden, Alabama, Mrs. McCandless had lived in Hugo since 1916, moving here from Bonham, Texas. She was a long time member of the Methodist church.
    Funeral services will be held in the Clayton Avenue Baptist church at 2:30 Friday with Rev. J.B. Ward officiating assisted by Dr. J.F. Murrell. Coffey Funeral home will be in charge of arrangements.
    Interment will be at Moores Chapel, Bonham, Texas.
    Mrs. McCandless is survived by two sons, Jack McCandless, Douglas, Ariz. And Tom McCandless, Amarilo, four daughters, Mrs. Gladys Fly, Berger[1], Tex., Willa Mae McCandless, Amarillo, Mrs. Jean Ellis, Hugo and Mrs. Lottie Ladyman, Borger and nine grandchildren.
    Aso surviving are three brothers, George W. Ward, Keota, Oklahoma Teris[2] E. Ward and Horace S. Ward, both of Sacramento, Calif., and one sister, Katherine Ward, also of Sacramento, Calif.
    Bearers for the funeral services will be W.F. Baker, Harry Simpson, Ambler Chambless, Clyde Deupree, H.B. Bohanon, Homer Brinlee [sic] and Coy Rhodes.

A.T. Beasley

Mr. A.T. Beasley Died This Morning
The Husonian Democrat June 10, 1948 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Mr. A.T. Beaseley [sic], 55, passed away at his home, 907 N. A at 11:25 this morning following a long illness.
    Born February 23, 1893, Mr. Beasley had lived in Hugo for many years, being a retired railroad man. Funeral services, under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home, will be held at the First Methodist Church at 5:00 p.m. Friday. Rev. Littleton Fowler, pastor, will officiate and the American Legion will make the arrangements. Mr. Beasley was a member of the Legion.
    He is survived by his wife, Mrs. A.T. Beasley, his father, W.F. Beaseley [sic], Hugo and four sisters, Mrs. Pauline Hutt, Ft. Worth, Mrs. Howard Wells, Cooper, Tex., Mrs. Ed Harris, Dallas, and Mrs. C.C. Guston, Amarillo.
    Also surviving are three brothers, W.F. Beaseley [sic] Jr. and Buddy Beaseley [sic], both of Hugo and Andy Beaseley [sic], St. Louis.


Shirley Ann Brookey

Funeral Services For Miss Brookey Friday Afternoon

    Funeral services for Miss Shirley Ann Brookey was held in the Church of Christ at Messer at four o’clock Friday afternoon. K.M. Kelly, minister for the Hugo church will officiate and the Coffey funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in Springs Chapel cemetery.
    Bearers was H.D. Wright, H. Gdiffin [sic], Johnny Wall, Ernest Henson, Bill Holley, and D.V. Woodruff.
    Miss Brookey was drowned in Kiamichi River Sunday afternoon. A group of friends and relatives composed a swimming party. They were Mr. And Mrs. Bill Woodruff, of Tshimingo [sic], Mr. And Mrs. D.V. Woodruff, and son Pat, Mrs. Chester Foreman and Jack Foster of Oklahoma City.
    The beach where the party was swimming was the same that had been used for several years. This was their first visit to it this year. All went in about the same time, and it was discovered that the river had cut a deep cannel [sic] over the beach that had been shallow heretofore and before the party realized their danger they were in ten foot water.
    Shirley Ann was born September 1, 1935, daughter of Lee Brookey, Messer Merchant.
    The following out of state relatives are here now or will arrive in time to attend the funeral services for Shirley Ann Brookey who lost her life in Kimici [sic] River Sunday afternoon.
    Jewell Songer, Little Rock, Ark., Coyle Brookey and wife and daughter Pat of Lubbock, Texas and Doris Fisher, of Augusta, Ga.


Helen Marshall

Mrs. Marshall Died In Hospital Tues.

    Mrs. Helen Marshall, 58, died in the Hugo Hospital Tuesday, June 8th.
    Born May 20, 1890 in Texas, Mrs. Marshall had made her home in El Paso for the past few years, and had moved here three weeks ago, living with her son John Marshall.
    Funeral services was held Thursday afternoon at 3:00 in the Sandy Cemetery north of Bonham, Texas. Coffery [sic] Funeral home was in charge.
    Mrs. Marshall is survived by five sons, John and Floyd Marshall, Hugo, Louis Marshall, Richmond, Va., Leroy Marshall, El Paso and Slarence [sic] Melson [sic], Dodge City, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Houcher, Hugo and Mrs. Sarah Belle Huff of Oregon.
    Also surviving is one brother, Will Jordan, Richmond, Va.


Edgar D. Masters

Edgar D. Masters Died Wednesday pm

    Mr. Edgar D. Masters, 56, of Bennington, died Wednesday night at 9:00 p.m. in the home of his brother Arthur Masters in Boswell. He died of a heart attack.
    Born September 2, 1893, in Middleton, Tennessee, Md. [sic] Masters had been a long time resident of Bennington. He had been manager of the Farmers Union Store and later opened his own grocery store there.
    Funeral services will be in the Baptist Church of Boswell at 3:00 p.m. today with Rev. Tayor [sic] officiating. Internment [sic] will be in the Boswell Cemetery. Coffey Funeral home is in charge of all arrangements.
    He is survived by two sons, Billy Joe Masters, in the army at Ft. Sill, Okla., and Jack Masters in the navy at Memphis, Tenn.
    Also surviving are two daughters, Miss Nelda Jean Masters, Sulphur and Mrs. Kathleen Pruitt, Mills Valley, Calif., two brothers, Arthur Masters, Boswell and Ed Masters, Caney, and one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Darity, Cedar Valley, Texas.


Lucinda Lee Clark

Mrs. Clark Died Tuesday Morning

    Mrs. J.S.B. Clark, of Boswell died in the Johnson Hospital here at nine o’clock Tues. morning. She had been ill for some time and was brought to the hospital about a week ago.
    Funeral services were held in the Church of Christ in Boswell at two thirty Wednesday afternoon with Brother Vaughn of Cordell, Oklahoma officiating and the Campbell funeral home in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Boswell cemetery.
    Lucinda Lee Clark was born in Charleston, Texas September 14, 1881 and had resided in Boswell for many years.
    She is survived by her husband, J.S.B. Clark, well known pioneer resident of Boswell and the following children, Jim Clark, Mrs. Haskell Watson and Jeff Clark of Boswell, Mrs. Clyde Welch, Austin, Texas, Dr. C.L. Clark, Sheldon, Iowa, Mrs. Hubert Williams, Cordell, Okla. Julius Clark Jr. Ft. Worth, Jerry Clark, Durant and Mrs. Joe Weedman, Denton, Texas.
    During her long residence in Boswell she had made many friends and was beloved by all who knew her. We join with the many friends in expressing condolence to the bereaved relatives.


John Kirkpatrick

John Kirkpatrick Died in Abilene

    John L. Kirkpatrick, Jr., 16, of Grant, Oklahoma was buried Monday at 3:00 p.m. in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hugo. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Edwards of Grant and Rev. Franklin, of Wright City.
    Kirkpatrick died from a fall from the 11th floor of a hotel in Abilene, Texas, at 3:20 a.m., Saturday.
    He had disappeared from his home last Tuesday, and the police had a call out for him. It is reported that he had shown up in a doctor’s office in Abilene Friday and had fainted while there. He was to return Saturday for treatment, but never did.
    When found by police, all his identification had been removed from his pockets except a clipping from a Hugo paper. He was tentatively identified from the police description. His family went to Abilene Saturday evening and positively identified him.
    Reason for his apparent suicide is unknown.
    Kirkpatrick is survived by his parents, Mr. And Mrs. J.L. Kirkpatrick, Grant, and one sister, Evelyn, also of Grant.


J.C. Milton

J.C. Milton Died In Hospital Sat.

    Mr. J.C. Milton, 37 of 801 E. Jefferson, died in the Hugo Hospital Saturday morning at 10:15. He had been a long-time sufferer from tuberculosis.
    Born September 29, 1910 in Direct, Texas, Mr. Milton moved here from Paris in 1929. He was an accountant and bookkeeper for the Public Service Co. here.
    Funeral services will be at the First Baptist church, of which he was a member, at 3:30 p.m. today, with Dr. J.F. Murrell officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
    He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alma Dell Milton, and his parents, Mr. And Mrs. John S. Milton of Paris.
    Also surviving are three brothers, George A. Milton, Lee A. Milton and Rex W. Milton, address unknown.
    Bearers will be A.W. Ohlfest, G.W. Dunn, W.B. Harris, Roy Gilliam, J.A. Phinney, Ralph Marshall, T.H. Farmer and W.B. McDowell. Coffey Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
