Clarence Pruitt Meets Tragic Death
The Soper Democrat August 24, 1933 – transcribed by Ron Henson

After searchers had labored untiringly for more than 36 hours, the murky waters of the South Canadian river Sunday afternoon were forced to relinquish the body of Clarence Pruitt, Stanolind [sic] Oil company employee, who Friday night plunged to his death from the approach to the Konawa-Ada river bridge when he, blinded by the lights of an automobile, lost control of his Buick coupe and it hurtled 250 feet to the bed of the river below. Pruitt’s body, enormously swollen, was found two miles downstream from the scene of the tragedy. It was lodged in driftwood, and searchers said, it would have been but a short while before it would have become visible with a recession of the river’s rise.
Captain R.B. Cavey, who led a party of Seminole firemen in the rescue work, said Pruitt’s clothing contained more than 100 pounds of sand. Jack Gale and E.K. Caveny were the other city firemen, who with R.D. Wright, formed the Seminole rescue corps.
Pruitt’s head was badly smashed and observers said that he was unquestionably killed in the precipitous plunge. The car was found upright in water hub deep although it was almost demolished in its somersault course.
Murrel Griffith, Mrs. Gladys Cook and Mrs. Ed Fisher, all of Ada, the other occupants of the car, suffered minor injuries. Griffith, suffering painful head injuries, returned Sunday to assist in the search.
The search, Caveny said, was made doubly difficult because of a rise in the river and its treacherous quicksand. – Seminole Producer.
