Robert A. Woods

R.A. Woods Passes Away

    Robert A. Woods, age 72, pioneer of the Nelson community, died shortly after 3:00 o’clock Monday A.M., Jan. 1st, 1934, in a Hugo hospital. He suffered an attack of paralysis that struck him late Wednesday evening of last week.
    Mr. Woods was born June 10, 1861 in Baltimore, Maryland. He came to the Nelson community when a young man, some fifty years ago, and has lived there until death.
    He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Thompson in 1891. To this union were born 4 children, 3 of whom survive, one dieing [sic] at the age of two years.
    Mr. Woods was one of the oldest pioneers of the Nelson community and was well known throughout Southeast Oklahoma.
    He served as postmaster of the Nelson postoffice for many years and was an old member of the W.O.W. lodge. His citizenship and services will be long remembered by the folks of Nelson and nearby places.
    He is survived by his wife Mrs. R.A. Woods, Nelson; two daughters and one son, Mrs. Grover Wright, Paris Texas, Mrs. Harvey Wright, Wilson, and Arthur Woods, Soper; eight grand children, Camilla, Geneva, Naomi, and Ostina Wright, Paris, Texas, Patsy Ruth and Christine Woods Soper, Okla. Wilma and H.G. Wright, Wilson.
    The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Nelson school house, with Rev. Alva A. Hutchinson, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Hugo, officiating.
    The many friends paid their last tribute to the old pioneer, and interment was made in the Sugar Creek Cemetery.


Jess Streetman

Man Killed In Wreck Sunday

    Jess Streetman, aged about 36, of Finley, was injured fatally in an automobile accident near Boswell late Sunday afternoon.
    The car in which Streetman and a man and a small child were riding, in attempting to miss several hogs which were on the highway, turned turtle and Streetman suffered a broken neck from which he died just as he was taken to Boswell.
    The accident occurred two miles east of Boswell.
    Streetman’s body was then taken to the Woodruff Funeral home at Antlers where funeral arrangements were made.
    The deceased is survived by his widow and several children, and a brother, G.W. Streetman of Hugo.
    The other man and the child were uninjured except for slight bruises, it was announced.


John C. Hill

Death of Little John C. Hill
The Soper Democrat January 18, 1934 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    John C. Hill, aged about 2 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Hill of the Atlas community, died at the family home last Thursday night. Cause of death was given as diphtheria. The little fellow has been sick only a few days.
    Burial was had in the Soper cemetary [sic] Friday afternoon, funeral services being conducted at the grave by J.T. Bolding, Baptist minister.
    He is survived by his parents, Grandfather Hill, grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. D.T. Jones, five brothers and two sisters.
    The bereaved ones have the sympathy of all in their deep sorrow.


Wesley Davis

Man Killed By Falling Limb

    Wesley Davis, aged about 50 years, was killed by a falling limb late yesterday afternoon. He and his son were clearing land on the J.W. Justice place on Bokchito creek southeast of Soper when the accident happened. He was killed instantly, the limb striking him on the head.


William D. Thomas

Ex-War Veteran Buried Tuesday
The Soper Democrat January 18, 1934 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    William D. Thomas, aged 48, an ex-war veteran, was buried in the Soper cemetary [sic] Tuesday afternoon, following services which were held at the cemetary [sic].
    Mr. Thomas died at his home in Boswell following an illness of pneumonia. Reverend McCroy, officiated at the services. The deceased is survived by four children, and three brothers.
    Snow Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements, with the American Legion in charge at the cemetary [sic].


Boss Gibson

Boss Gibson Died Monday

    Boss Gibson, aged 22 years, died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Gibson, at Duland, six miles south of Soper, Monday night at 11 o’clock. Cause of death was given as pneumonia. He had been sick only a few days.
    Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock and burial was in the Crowder Springs cemetary [sic].
    Two other boys in the family are reported to be quite sick with pneumonia.


Sheb Gibson

Sheb Gibson Died Saturday
The Soper Democrat February 1, 1934 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Sheb Gibson, aged 19 years, died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Gibson, at Duland, six miles south of Soper, Saturday morning at three o’clock. The cause of his death was influenza. He had been sick only a few days before death took him away.
    He was a brother of Bose [sic] Gibson, who was laid to rest last Tuesday at the Crowder Springs cemetary [sic]. His death was caused by pneumonia. Both young men were well known in this district, and had many friends who knew them to be Christian gentlemen in every respect.
    Sheb was buried by the side of his brother, Bose, Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The Reverend W. Howard Moore, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Boswell, conducted both funeral services.


Henry Boykin

Death Of Henry Boykin

    Henry Boykin died at the family home three miles north of Mudsand Saturday afternoon, Jan. 27, 1934. Mr. Boykin had only been sick about 24 hours. Cause of death was given as conjeston. Besides his wife he leaves eight children. The following children survive him: Mrs. Sam Smith, Mrs. Thurman Dials, Mrs. Tom Hendrix, Bill, Jessie, Cecil, George and Jack Boykins; several grandchildren and a host of other relatives to mourn his death.
    Mr. Boykin was about 70 years old. He was laid to rest in the Hall cemetary [sic] Saturday afternoon. Eld. M.A. Pillars conducted the services.
    A good man has gone to rest. May God’s blessings rest upon the bereaved. – A Friend.


Juanita Winship & Jim Graham’s son

Twenty Years Ago [February 1914]

    Little Miss Juanita Winship, daughter of Mrs. Jennie Winship, died Sunday night at 11 o’clock. Death was due to hydrophobia, she having been bitten by a mad dog five weeks previous. Another death occurred from the same malady, a son of Jim Graham, of Nelson, having died the same day. Many worthless dogs were killed by the town authorities. Chas. Holt was scratched on the hand by a dog supposed to be mad, as also was Joe Scott, and they went to Austin for the Pasteur treatment. No hydrophobia developed in either case.


Nellie Archie

Death of Mrs. Nellie Archie

    Mrs. Nellie Archie met death in one of the most painful ways. While burning grass last Friday afternoon her clothing caught fire and she was so badly burned that she died Saturday afternoon, Feb. 3, at about 5 o’clock at the Doctors Hospital at Hugo.
    Her daughter, Mrs. Vin Marsh was badly burned on the hands while trying to save her mother.
    Mrs. Archie leaves three children, Jess and Edd Archie and Mrs. Vim [sic] March; two step children, Tom Archie and Mrs. John Nowell, and five grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her death. Mrs. Archie was a true Christian woman, having been a member of the Freewill Baptist church twenty-four years. She will be sadly missed by her loved ones and the religous [sic] work in the community, but our loss is her eternal gain. Truly a good woman has gone to rest.
    She was laid to rest in the Sugar Creek cemetary [sic] Sunday afternoon by her husband and four children who have gone on to the glory world. Her husband W.M. Archie, departed this life Feb. 8th, 1928. A large crowd was present to pay their last respect. Funeral services were conducted by Eld. J.M. Hatcher.
    May God’s richest blessings rest upon the bereaved. – A Friend.

Bettie Roberts

Mrs. J.H. Roberts Buried Saturday
The Soper Democrat March 1, 1934 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Mrs. Bettie Roberts, aged 66 years, wife of J.H. Roberts, died at the family home south of Bluff, Friday morning about 7 o’clock, following a stroke of paralysis which struck her 36 hours before.
    Funeral services were held in the Soper Baptist church Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock, conduted [sic] by Rev. J.T. Bolding, pastor of the Soper Baptist church, and burial was in the Soper cemetary [sic].
    She is survived by her husband, two sisters and a brother. She and her husband have lived in this section for many years.


Dorsey Shawhart

Dorsey Shawhart Dies of Burns
The Soper Democrat March 1, 1934 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Dorsey Shawhart, aged about 25 years, died at his home six miles south of Soper, across Boggy River, at 10 o’clock Tuesday night following burns he received the night before.
    According to information his clothes caught fire while he was asleep beside a log fire in the woods near his home, about midnight. Almost all of his clothing were burned from his body.
    Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the grave, conducted by Rev. J.T. Bolding, and burial was in the Soper Cemetary [sic].
    Shawhart is survived by his wife, who was Miss Ollie Edge, his mother and two children.


Charles R. Baber

Charles Baber Passes Away
The Soper Democrat March 8, 1934 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Charles Baber, aged 13 years, died at the St. Joseph infirmary at Paris last night, following an emergency operation for appendicitis. The little fellow had been sick only a few days and yesterday morning it was decided to operate in an effort to save his life. He failed to rally, death relieving him of his suffering at 8 o’clock.
    Funeral services will be held at the Soper Methodist Church tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by Rev. H.M. Cosby, local pastor, assisted by Rev. Alva Hutchinson, pastor of the Hugo Methodist church. Interment will be in the Soper Cemetary [sic].
    Pallbearers will be: Walter Carlson, R.L. Jones, R.E. Crosset, R.K. Jenner, L.R. Blakely and Mr. Brittain.
    Charles Robert Baber was born at Soper on October 1st, 1920, and has lived here most of his life. For a time he lived with his parents in Hugo. He was a student of Soper High School and was a model scholar. His classmates will attend the funeral in a body.
    Besides his father he is survived by a brother, Joe, his grandmother, Mrs. C.J. Johnson, and numerous aunts and uncles.
    Charles was one of the best boys the writer ever knew, and his passing is sad. The bereaved relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of all in their great sorrow.


Betty Winn

Betty Winn Buried Today

    Little Betty Winn, 5 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Winn, of the Atlas community, died at the family home Wednesday morning about 10 o’clock. She had been ill for some few days with measles and had recovered when pneumonia set up.
    Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Soper Methodist church, conducted by Rev. J.T. Bolding, pastor of the Soper Baptist church. Interment was in the Soper cemetary [sic].
    Little Betty was a favorite of all who knew her and her passing is keenly felt by all. The bereaved parents and other relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of all.


Viver Agnes Hatton Long

Death of Mrs. Viver Agnes Hatton Long
The Soper Democrat March 22, 1934 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Mrs. Viver Agnes Hatton Long, aged 28 years, died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D.E. Hatton, several miles north of Soper, Monday morning about 11 o’clock.
    Funeral services were held at the Soper Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, conducted by Rev. J.T. Bolding, local Baptist pastor. Interment was in the Soper Cemetary [sic].
    Mrs. Long had for several years fought a losing battle for her health. Cause of her death was due to tuberculosis. She was married to L.H. Long on Dec. 24, 1922, and to the union one child was born, Davis Edward, who survives her. She is also survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D.E. Hatton, her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Awbrey, two brothers, Horrace and Ferrell Hatton, one sister, Edith Myrle, and many relatives and friends. She was converted and joined the Baptist church about 12 years ago.


Martha Small

Martha Small Died Monday

    Martha Small, 5 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Small, died at the family home south of Soper, Monday, following an attack of pneumonia. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the grave, conducted by Rev. J.T. Bolding, Baptist pastor, followed by interment in the Soper cemetary [sic].
    She is survived by her parents, a brother, Jessie, a sister, Rosilee, and other relatives.


Mrs. Manley Wiginton

Death of Mrs. Manley Wiginton
The Soper Democrat March 29, 1934 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Mrs. Wiginton, aged about 50 years, wife of Manley Wiginton, died at the family home several miles southeast of Soper, Tuesday night, following a two weeks’ illness. Death was said to have been due to rheumatic infection.
    Funeral services were held and burial was in the Goodland cemetery yesterday at 10 o’clock.
    Besides her husband she is survived by six children and a brother.


Rachel Lawrence

Mrs. Lawrence Buried Here Friday
The Soper Democrat March 29, 1934 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Mrs. Rachel Lawrence, wife of W.M. Lawrence, died at the family home at Coleman last Thursday afternoon, and the remains were brought to Soper and burial was had in the Soper Cemetery Friday afternoon, with services conducted by Rev. J.T. Bolding, of Soper and Rev. Ernest Quick, of Hugo.
    Mrs. Lawrence had been sick for several months. Besides her husband she is survived by a son, Stewart, and two grandchildren, her father, J.W. Stewart, of Hugo, brothers, Avery Stewart, Whittier, Calif., Hedge Stewart, Hugo. Four sisters, Mrs. Leve Burrous, Soper, Mrs. Fannie Corley, Soper, Mrs. T.W. Tyler, Hugo, and Mrs. W.L. Allen, Electra, Texas, also survive.
    A number of years ago she resided near Soper.


Andrew Beryl McFarland

A.B. McFarland Died Saturday
The Soper Democrat April 5, 1934 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    Andrew Beryl McFarland, aged 34 years, died at his home here Saturday morning about 2 o’clock, following an extended illness. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. J.T. Bolding, local Baptist pastor. Interment was in the Soper cemetery.
    He was born near Madill on August 5, 1899, and moved to Soper in 1928. He was married to Miss Lucy Middleton on Dec. 10, 1918. To the union five children were born, viz: Era Mae, A.J., Calvin, George and Elvie. He is also survived by his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Johnson.
    Mr. McFarland was engaged in the saw mill business here for some time.


Clark Cantrell

Good Hill Items
The Soper Democrat April 26, 1934 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    This community was greatly shocked and saddened when word was received of the death of Mr. Clark Cantrell Wednesday. He died in Oklahoma City where he had been taken for treatment. Mr. Cantrell was held in high esteem by those who knew him. Burial was held at Crowder Springs Thursday, 2:30 afternoon. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.T. Bolding of the Soper Baptist church. Mr. Cantrell is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Frazier of Good Hill and Mrs. Smotherman of Jackson County, Oklahoma, and a son, Louis Cantrell of the home, eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
    Among those from out of town to attend the funeral of Mr. Cantrell were Mr. and Mrs. Smotherman and daughter from Jackson County, Oklahoma, and Louis Cantrell of Cloudy, Oklahoma.


William Young Hill

William Young Hill Died Tuesday
The Soper Democrat May 3, 1934 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    William Young Hill, aged 79 years, 3 months and 12 days, died at the home of his son, R.L. Hill, in the Atlas community, Tuesday morning about 10 o’clock. Cause of death was given as old age. He had been in bad health for some time.
    The body was taken to Blossom, Texas, Wednesday morning, for burial. Mr. Hill was born in South Carolina. He had lived in and near Soper for a number of years, where he made many warm friends, who are grieved to learn of his death.


Draper infant

The Soper Democrat May 3, 1934 – transcribed by Ron Henson

    The entire community was grieved to learn of the death Friday of the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wes Draper. Funeral services, conducted by Lee Gilmore, were held Saturday afternoon. Burial was in the Bethehem [sic] cemetery.
