R. Eastland Died Saturday; Funeral Here Next Thursday

Ralph Eastland, Hugo merchant, died in Providence Hospital, Portland, Oregon, Saturday following an illness of about ten days. The body is expected to arrive in Hugo next Wednesday and a tentative funeral date has been set for Thursday.

Mr. and Mrs. Eastland left Hugo about a month ago on an extended vacation trip to the pacific coast. He was stricken ill in Portland and admitted to the hospital.

His son, Milton Eastland, Commerce, Tex., flew to his bedside on being advised of his illness and remained with him until the end. He will fly home and Mrs. Eastland will accompany the body of her husband to Hugo.

Mr. Eastland came to Hugo about twenty-five years ago and proprieted a 5 & 10 Cent store which has operated continuously ever since. He also owned stores at Commerce and Mt. Vernon, Texas.

Funeral services for Ralph Eastland will be held in the First Baptist church Thursday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock with Dr. J. F. Murrell, pastor, officiating and the Campbell Funeral home in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet.

Ralph Eastland was born Jan. 30, 1880, in Gonzales, Texas and resided in Texas until about twenty-five years ago when he established his residence and business in Hugo where he has resided since that time.

About a month ago he and Mrs. Eastland left Hugo on an extended vacation trip to the Pacific Coast and he was stricken ill at the home of his brother in Portland, Oregon, and was taken to the Providence hospital in that city where he passed away, Saturday, August 31.

His son, Milton Eastland, of Commerce, Tex., flew to his bedside following receipt of a message that he was stricken, and remained with him until the end.

The body will arrive in Paris this afternoon at 5:30 and be met by a Campbell funeral car and brought to Hugo.

Bearers will be W. H. King, Jake Cobb, Wren Moore, Carl Hansen, Mr. E .Woods, F. M. Caldwell, Homer Coggins and C. L. Yates.

Honorary bearers will be Joe Wolff and all members of the board of deacons of the First Baptist church.

Mr. Eastland had been a life-long and devout member of the Baptist church and one of the leading businessmen of Hugo. He numbered his friends by all who knew him, and the News joins with them in extending condolence to the bereaved relatives.
