Mary Lee Jacks
contributed by The Hugo Daily News
Lifelong Hugo resident, Mary Lee Jacks, 89, died on February 22, 2006 in Oroville, California, where she had been living near her sister Ruth McDonald. Mrs. Jacks was born on July 25, 1916 in Hugo, Oklahoma to Mary Eugenia (Hallman) Evans and Robert L. Evans. Judge Evans, her father, was a well known attorney in Hugo. Mary Lee attended local schools and graduated from Hugo High School in 1934. She later attended cosmetology school and became a beautician at Sexton’s Beauty and Barber Shop in Hugo. Mary Lee married the late James Douglas Jacks of Hope, Arkansas on October 1, 1938. Their love affair continued throughout a lifetime. During WWII, Mr. Jacks served in the European theatre in the 104th Infantry Division where he was captured by German forces and sent to Stalag 2A prison camp and later endured a 500 mile march to another prison camp. Mrs. Jacks kept faithful vigil at home in Hugo, awaiting his return. After Mr. Jack’s return home, the couple spent one year in Cheyenne Wyoming, while J.D. completed his final year of military service. Mary Lee always proudly displayed the POW license plate on her car commemorating the bravery of her husband. After living in Wyoming, the Jacks returned to Hugo where J.D. resumed his work managing the Babcock Bros. Store and Mary Lee continued as a homemaker. Mary Lee and J.D. were loyal members of the First United Methodist Church in Hugo where she was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a long time member of the Joy Sunday School class. She also taught Sunday school in the primary department at the church for many years. Mrs. Jacks was a member of the women’s auxiliary of Hugo’s Sanders Tucker American Legion Post and the ESA service sorority. Mary Lee was a devoted wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. The love, compassion, and fun she gave to those fortunate enough to know her were unbounded. She spent many an hour giving comfort by the bedside of those who were ill or dying. She thoroughly enjoyed playing bridge, canasta, and Tripoli, as well as many other activities with her many Hugo friends. Mary Lee’s many friends were like extended family members to her. She was an encourager who was so proud of the achievements of all she knew and in particular those of her family. Although she did not have children of her own, any children that knew her loved her dearly and became “hers”. Mrs. Jacks is survived by a sister, Ruth (Evans) McDonald of Oroville, California, a brother Ralph Evans of San Antonio, Texas, and a sister-in law, Ann Wedemeyer of Tyler, Texas. Surviving nieces and nephews include: Dwight Evans, Jr. of Anniston, Alabama, Annette Gaston, of Sylacauga, Alabama, Harriette Ford of Foley, Alabama, Wayland McDonald of Paradise, California, Lex McDonald of Oroville, California, Jena Wittmack of Yuba City, California, Priscilla Tuchsen of Thousand Oaks, California, Theresa Bernal of Rawlett, Texas, Erle Evans of Winona, Texas, Mike Wedemeyer of Tyler, Texas, Anna Jean Sites of Upland, California, Ross Massey of Colton, California, R.L. Massey of Redlands, California, Roseann Herndon of Oklahoma City, and Mary Emily Andre of Ft. Collins, Colorado. Mrs. Jacks was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Jacks, a sister, Lois Massey Virgin, and four brothers, Noel Evans, Dr. Dwight Evans, Erle Evans, MD, and Vincent Evans, nephews Ralph Vincent Evans and Willard Evans, a niece Leanda Jean McDonald, sisters-in-law Elizabeth Evans, Lillian Evans, Letha Evans, Jessie Evans and Wilma Erwin, and brother-in-laws Floyd McDonald, and Millard Massey.
