Monday Rites are Held for Manton Nelson of Grant
John Manton Nelson, prominent Grant citizen for the past 40 years died at 8:30 A.M. Sunday in the Sanitarium of Paris as a result of a heart ailment.
Funeral services were conducted in the Grant Methodist Church at 2:30 P.M. Monday. Rev. W. E. McCartney, pastor, officiated at the rites. Interment was in the Grant Cemetery with Coffee Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bird L. Nelson: a stepson, Eugene Babb: three grandchildren, Paula, Phil and Joe Perry Babb: Two nephews, Lloyd Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Albert Nelson of Galveston, Tx:, and three nieces: Mrs. Florine Smith of Grant, Mrs. Burrell McClure of Bonham, Tx. and Mrs. Faye Bowman of Los Angeles, Calif.
Pallbearers at the Monday services were Marvin Dickson, Lee Max, Clyde Ray, Jack Norris, Walter Wilkins and O. D. Gooding.
Mr. Nelson was taken to the Paris hospital a little more than a week ago.
The prominent merchant, farmer of Grant was born on January 11, 1884 in Paris, Texas. He came to Grant from Paris 40 years ago and maintained a continuous residence there since that time.
He operated a general merchandise store and at one time owned a cotton gin in Grant. He served as the Grant Postmaster until about 2 years ago when the post office building was destroyed by fire.
Mr. Nelson was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Grant Methodist Church.
