Welcome To Cotton County |
||
Walters The county seat of Cotton County is Walters, which was established on December 9, 1901. It was originally named McKnight, after a Major McKnight, who was the government registrar of the land office in Lawton. That name lasted only a few months. One group called the town Walters, named after William R. Walter, who was a prominent local resident and one of the three original town site commissioners. However, the post office and train depot were officially known as Walter. An Act of Congress on June 23, 1917, officially changed the name of the post office to Walters. Other Communities
Other communities in Cotton County are Cookietown, Devol, Fivemile Corner,
Hooper, Hulen, Randlett, Taylor, and Temple. Many thanks to
Linda Garrison with the
Southwest Oklahoma Genealogical
Society (and longtime Walters resident) for the above history. If
you are planning a trip to Walters to do research in the court house, the
only motel in Cotton County is the Sands Motel in Temple. There is a
larger selection of hotels and motels in Lawton,
within 25 miles north of Walters. Geographic Names Information System
