There was a C Clifton and J W Clifton listed as Voters in Estella, Craig county for 1909 and 1910. I have census info for 1910 in Roosevelt Co. NM. where they had a homestead. They always stayed together as a family. The reason I think they lived in Craig Co. area was that Claude married Fee Wickliffe in 1904 in Warsaw MO. and took her to OK. Their first two children were born in OK. (not sure where), in 1906 and 1908 before going to NM. Claude was killed in NM. on 1/1/1913. His brother John married Fee and moved back to OK in the Big Cabin area. This is where my father, Claude Elmer Clifton, was born 0n 5/19/1916. John then joined Army again during WWI in Vinita, OK. I have spent hundreds of hours over the last 14 years trying to find the location of the marriage of my reat-grandparents who married 16 March 1885, according to family records. Her parents lived in Cherokee County, KS at the time of the marriage and the young couple later lived near Joplin, MO. Checks of all the courthouse records for dozens of counties near these locations have turned up nothing. Finally tonight I got a breakthrough. I talked to a man in Burlington, IA who had a wooden box with a letter in it written by the groom, dated 14 March 1885, two days before the marriage. It was postmarked Vinita, I.T. It took some time with an atlas before I realized that this meant "Indian Territory". It now appears that they probably got married in the Indian Territory (near Vinita), which I was once told was something that a lot of couples did who lived in the bordering counties around Oklahoma. Is there any way that you know of to find a marriage record like this, before such records were kept in courthouses? If it helps, the couple who married were William H. NUTTER and Sarah E. JONES (maiden name PHILLIPS). Any suggestions that you may give me would help. I am going to Salt Lake City to the huge Family History Library there in about a month and could look up some of the Oklahoma Indian Archive Records if I had a good idea where to start for the Vinita area. Any ideas whatsoever?
