I am trying to learn any details available on William HALLUM (son of William HALLUM and Mary MITCHELL) and his wife Mickey ENGLAND. I have a detail indicating Vinita, Oklahoma was either a last known address or their burial place. William was born in Chattahoochie, Georgia. I have no dates but suspect his birth to have been in the early 1800's or possibly late 1700's.
I do have a list of the children of William and Mickey: George, Juann, Floyd, Ben, John, Martha, Emma, Georgia and Eva.
Any clues on any of the above mentioned individuals would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. The John Ballinger Family mentioned were from Grundy County, Missouri. They left there about 1915 and journeyed to New Mexico, then followed the wheat harvest north ending in Washington and Oregon. They settled in the Vinita/Afton area of Oklahoma for a short while, about 1917 or 1918, then moved to Kansas City, Missouri about 1919 or 1920. John Ballinger was a super salesman who mainly sold fruit trees for a company in Southern Missouri. My father, Glen Ballinger, married Imo Gene Dixon of Welch, OK in Kansas City. No one knows for sure, but we think they met in Oklahoma. Imo was the granddaughter of the Broyles family clan of Welch.
I am not familiar with the persons you mentioned.

Query posted by Shepard, D on December 15, 1999
for , BERNETT, BURNETT, MILLER
|
Thank you so very much for your response and the helpful information.
If this is the John BERNETT we are looking for, then he might have had family in the area. In 1900 two of his children, John and William, were in Joplin, MO. with their mother, Dora BURNETT. John and Dora may have been divorced, she is listed as single in 1900, but widowed in 1910 and 1920. (Dora's obituary said her husband died in 1907.) In the Miami, OK. newspaper there was a June 6, 1903 marriage of a John BERNETT and Ida MILLER. This could be a different person, but BERNETT isn't that common of a name.
Do you think the cemetery office would have any more information? We have looked for John for a long time and would love to know if we've finally found him.
Again, thank you.

Query posted by Society, Craig County Genealogy on December 15, 1999

Mr. Bernett is buried in block nine at Fairview Cemetery, Vinita, OK. This is an old burial area, which is being used for new burials now. Some over-burials have likely occurred here. In the days when John was buried, this was a paupers section, for low or no cost burials. Much of this area was designated as a "colored" section. We did not find any listing of his death in the newspaper index books that we have, but I did not check the newspaper microfilms. Will keep my eyes and ears open for him when I do. {Also, are any of his kinfolks supposed to be in this area?}Lots of luck!

VINITA'S Drum Corps HONORED
Invited to Participate in Claremore Dedication; Community Briefs
VINITA, Aug 4 -- Vinita's girl drum corps will go to Claremore Friday, August 6, by special invitation of that city to take part in the huge parade that will celebrate the opening of Claremore's new court house. Twelve state bands will be on hand to add to the afternoon's festivities, but Vinita will contribute the only drum corps, it has been announced. The girls will leave from the Vinita high school auditorium at 12:30 and arrive in Claremore in time to play a feature roll in the parade, which will open at 2 o'clock. Wearing their cow girl uniforms, the drum corps members will do their share of advertising the coming Will Rogers Memorial rodeo, scheduled to be held in Vinita Sept. 3, 4 and 5. It will be the last scheduled appearance of the organization before the September event. The girls have been holding practice sessions during the summer months.

HEMPHILL-LEWIS MARRIAGE AUG 1937 132

This is another clipping from the scrapbook of my aunt, Lovie Mai Fryer Karr, apparently of a classmate. She was living at Vinita, Craig County, OK at the time
Paper unknown August 1937 was at the top of the scrapbook page and the fact the bride graduated from Vinita High School in 1937 seems to confirm this date.
The marriage of Miss Myrtle Lewis, daughter of Mrs. Lula Mae Lewis of the Tavern apartments to Sam Hemphill of Chelsea was solemnized Saturday night at the Baptist parsonage in Chelsea, where he is employed with an oil company. The bride was graduated from the Vinita high school with the class of 1937 and was well known here. Guests at the wedding were the bride's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Smith of Vinita and Mr. Hemphill's parents, his sister and his brother-in-law.
I wish the website would add a new board for "Marriages" so these could be posted there instead of on the Query board.

This also came from the scrapbook of Lovie Mai Fryer Karr and is pasted into the Graduation Time Memory book of Edward Earl Karr, her husband. He graduated from Vinita High School, craig County, OK in 1930, six years before she did. It may have appeared in the High School paper.
DR. BAGBY SPEAKS IN H. S. ASSEMBLY
Last week in assembly Dr. Louis Bagby spoke to the high school students on vaccination. He told of the discovery of vaccine and it use in preventing smallpox epidemics. He also explained the tonine-anti-toxine inoculation for diptheria and inoculation for typhoid fever and scarlet fever. The students appreciated his talk very much for he explained many things which we had been wanting to know.
The Boys Glee club of Vinita High school composed of twenty of the outstanding singers of the school is one of the best clubs in the history of this institution. After hearing their concert and operetta on Thursday night every student of V. H. S. will be prroud that we possess such an organization. Don't miss their program.
Are vaccines and inoculations really only sixty years old?

I had caught the name HOOLIE BELL on list. I have been rereading a booklet that was written by STELLA CARSELOWERY CROUCH I dont know what year it was written. It was given to me in 1973. title -Story of the Cherokee Indians. Lots of info about Vinita Craig Co.`On page 52 a portion of the paragraph. Our home was on SO Second St, on the So West corner of East Illinois & So Second St. where the Branstetter Grocery stands. we lived in the house just so of the store. The east side was considered the best part of town in its early days, and some of the most prominent familys lived there. On the corner east of us lived the family DR M.P.Haynes, across the street was the home of Oce Trott. SO. of that in the property known as the Griffin truck farm lived the HOOLIE BELLS, their granddaughter BELLE MADDOX lived with them. I thought that this might be a bit of family history you would enjoy knowing.

Powells in Vinita 140

Looking for information on Sylvester Bertram "Bert" POWELL and his wife Henrietta Jane "Ettie" MANOR. The Powells took part in the 1893 land run, settling west of Enid until about 1915 when they removed to Vinita, Craig Co., OK where they both died in the mid 1950s. (I've seen MANOR spelled Mainer, Maner, and sundry other ways, so who knows which is correct.)
Three children were born to their marriage: Charles in 1894 (he ran Vinita Motors on So. Scraper until I believe some time in the 1970s; Ethel Leota in 1901 married Eugene Lewis CATLIN; and Earl M. in about 1903. The last I've been able to find about Earl, is that he lived in San Diego, CA with his family.
S.B. POWELL's parents are unknown to me. Henrietta MANOR's parents were Samuel and Margaret (McCOY) MANOR.
Any help is appreciated.

Afraid not. The cemetery office has only maps were are always accurate. The city did not start keeping burial records until late 1930's. They have basically nothing before 1936-37. The tombstone inscription book of the gen. soc. from which we obtained the previous information is the best source there is.

Man Slain Near Welch; Wife's Father is Held
James Swango, 33, Shot Dead While Feeding Chickens; Ed Fansler, 59, Held
James Emmett Swango, 33, an employee of the Eastern Oklahoma hospital, was shot to death early Sunday, two miles southwest of here, and his father-in-law, Ed Fansler, 59, was held at Craig county jail today for investigation.
Swango was killed, Sheriff Roger Waller said, while feeding chickens near a house in which he, his wife and Fansler had been living.
Mrs. Swango, who was in the chicken house at the time, said she ran outside when she heard the report of a .22 caliber rifle. She shouted, "My God you've shot him." at her father, standing about 30 yards away.
"Glad I Did," He Says
Investigators quoted Fansler as saying: "Sure I did and I'm glad I did."
The bullet entered the back of Swango's head, at the base of the brain. The victim died instantly.
Besides his wife, Swango is survived by five brothers, John and Oliver Swango, both of Charleston, Ill., Tom and Steve Swango, both of Picher, and Bud Swango of near Welch.
No charge had been brought against Fansler at noon today.
