They have built the Gym on the north side of the street and a gravel parking lot behind the Post Office on the south side of the street. Ross St. goes through the middle of this once cemetery. I have no idea what they have done with all the headstones that once covered this property. Jo Melton Chouteau Cemetery

"There are five unmarked graves beneath the Cedar tree on the southwest corner of the intersection of E0640 road and N4340 road. This is about six miles east, southeast, of Mazie, a mile south of Three Finger Bay. I think this farm originally belonged to the Forkham's years ago. This is all from ancient memory.
My Great grandfather, grandmother, and two uncles who died as babies in the flu epidemic of 1918, all last name Williams, plus a woman whose last name was Phillips are buried there. These were Cherokee Indians and grave stones with Cherokee inscriptions marked the graves until the water department tore down the old water tower and built the new water tower further up the hill. I was told that workmen threw the gravestones into the concrete box which is at the location of the graves.
Mrs. Palmer who owned the land north of the intersection said she could find the graves in the springtime when the flag flowers came up but she died before she could show me. My uncle tended the graves until he died in the 1980's. My parents who told me this history have died.
The Bark family moved to just south of the intersection in the 1960's and once told me about the spooky graveyard at the top of the hill. They looked at me strangely when I told them that at night the graveyard was a warm place to me and that it was my great-grandparents graves.
There are Indian mounds on the old Palmer place north of the intersection and in the 1990's a family moved there from California. They unknowingly cut into one of the mounds and believed they had become cursed after their children started suffering mysterious illnesses. They would not talk about it and went back to California.
There was a major Indian encampment on the north bank of Three Finger Bay at the entrance to the Grand River Channel. This was a shallow crossing of Grand River before Fort Gibson Dam was built. People are always digging arrowheads out of this bank after a flood or rain. About two years ago the fools were digging in freezing wet weather and slid down the bank into the icy lake.
Above Three Finger Bay to the south up on top of the mountain there were old Indian ceremonial grounds but all traces are now gone. I guess this area was the Cherokee section of Mayes County.
I feel somewhat guilty about not being able to mark the graves. We own the last 20 acres of my Grandmother's Indian allotment a quarter mile east of the intersection."
