Because of various treaties with the United States, the Chickasaw tribe was assigned land in Indian Territory. The Chickasaw land was divided into "counties". These counties were Panola, Perry, Caddo and Wichita.
Controversy arose over the boundaries and was settled by the Treaty of 1854.
The Treaty of June 22, 1855 changed the boundaries again, but the Chickasaw were assigned this land outright with the authority to organize themselves into a separate nation with laws of their own.
The leaders, decided to meet in August of 1856 at Good Springs (now called Tishomingo) and there they wrote a constitution and organized their government under the title of the Chickasaw Nation and Tishomingo was to be the capitol.
The land was once again divided into "counties". They were Panola, Tishomingo, Pontotoc and Pickens. Todays, McClain County was in the Old Pontotoc county.
