Generation No. 1

1. VOLLIE AUSTIN2 KILLINGSWORTH (WILLIAM JOHNSON1) was born 10 Nov 1888 in
Carbon Hill, Alabama, and died 28 Feb 1972 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He married
EXIE CAROLINE STUDDARD 21 Jul 1907 in Carbon Hill, Alabama, daughter of
ANDREW STUDDARD and LEE DOBBINS. She was born 30 Mar 1891 in Carbon Hill,
Alabama, and died 12 Sep 1955 in Checotah, Oklahoma.

Notes for VOLLIE AUSTIN KILLINGSWORTH:

Vollie and Exie are buried in the Checotah, OK cemetary. They farmed in
Alabama and worked in the coal mines until November 1921.

November 3, 1921 they moved to a farm near Pierce, OK and farmed until
retirement.

Vollie was a complete storty teller, people enjoyed being around him to
listen to stories told during his earlier years. He was a very knowledgeable
person.

Notes for EXIE CAROLINE STUDDARD:

Exie was 1/4 Cherokee Indian.

She was a very good mother, filling many rolls for the family, the cook,
housekeeper, mother, wife, doctor, barber, chaplain, peacemaker, you name it
she tried to help.

All laundry was performed on a rub board and a flat iron until 1933 when a
gasoline maytag washing machine was purchased. This machine was used to do
the laundry for three families (Ruby, Grace and for the home).

The first replacement for the flat iron was a gas heated iron.

Electricty was not available in the farm community until 1945.

Life was very rough, your food was grown from gardens and meat was obtained
from the animals that was raised for that purpose.

Eva Herren (Exie's sister) told me that when Exie was young, that they had
to walk to school and that they did not go to school every school day. They
went to school only when they could. They worked in the fields.

Part of a year Exie stayed with an uncle in Eldridge, AL., so she could go
to school.
