Daniel Newman MCINTOSH

Daniel Newman MCINTOSH was born on 20 Sep 1822 in Indian Springs, Georgia. He died on 10 Apr 1896 in Creek Nation, Indian Territory. He was was 5/8 mixed Creek/Cherokee.

Daniel Newman was a prominent citizen who fought in various battles; was a leader of his people.

He had long hair, past his shoulders, with a mustache and go tee.

The first to occupy lands in I.T. were Susannah (Roe) McIntosh along with her infant son Daniel Newnan, they lived on a high hill near the Verdigris, she owned two Negro families who worked her land.

Daniel Newman McIntosh, youngest son of Chief William and Susannah McIntosh, was bom at Indian Springs, GA, 20 Sept.1822. He came west 1830, living with relatives on the lower Verdigris, but as an adult, made a home near what is now Fame in McIntosh County.
Daniel Newnan was the baby who was taken out of the burning house by his oldest brother, Chilly, on the night the their father was killed by the Hostiles.

He had a good education at the local schools; Cane Hill College in Arkansas; R.N. Smith Institute at Louisville, Ky.

He was Clerk of the Lower House in the Nation and later a member of the House of Warriors.
He was a respected leader among the Creeks and represented his people in Washington, D.C. for years. He was a Supreme Judge in the Creek Nation and for a while was Chief Justice of the Creek Court. He was also a Tribal Attorney of prominence and held every important job in the Nation except to Chief.

His oldest brother Chilly had formed a second group of Creek Soldiers and they joined Gen. D.N.'s command.

He had been a financial success from farming and raising cattle. .

1830 he immigrated to Indian Territory (later Oklahoma)

1860 - 1864 D.N. was a Colonel in the 2nd Co. C

1861 he raised a company of Creek Soldiers to serve as Co. A in the first Creek
regiment. He was made a General over this new regiment.

Daniel married (4) Winnie CANARD (now I don’t know when he married Winnie. It is most likely that he was married to her at the same time as he was married to others. According to the birth dates of both their children they were in a relationship in 1861 and 1879 while other children were being born to D.N. McIntosh)

Son William L. Yancy was born (a source says he was born in 1898, (he also says he was born in 1898 in an application) which is physically impossible since D.N. was dead over a year by then. Also he was in the household of D.N. McIntosh in the 1895 payroll and 1895 Creek Nation census.

I Solomon McIntosh is my name. I live in Okmulgee. I am a Creek Citizen. I think I am about 83 or 84 years old.
Q. Did you come from Alabama? A. Yes sir. I belong to Col. McIntosh.
Q. What town did Col. D.N. McIntosh belong? A. He belong to Cowetah.
Q. You was raised in the Town, do you know positively that these people were
Creeks? A. Yes I know them good.
Q. Did the Berryhills come to this country with the Creek Indians? A. Yes
they came with the Chilly McIntosh Party.
Q. When they emigrated to this country where did they live? A. On the
banks of the Virdigris.

20 Feb 1895, in Eufaula, Indian Territory, he transferred of all his property to his wife and children for the sum of one dollar

1895 he is 73 in and his town is Fame, Creek Nation. His wife Elizabeth Jane is listed
as deceased.

1896 he is on the Cherokee Old Settler roll

1896 he appeared on the Creek census for Fame on page 28

D.N. was a Baptist Minister for the last 12 years of his life .

On a couple of payrolls there is a Daniel Bard and a George Harrison in the household; they are grandsons.

1896 D.N. McIntosh died.
Daniel is on the 1902-07 Dawes roll as a parent on Creek census cards 544, 836, 873, 3263

Daniel married (1) Elsie OTTERLIFTER daughter of John OTTERLIFTER and Susanna HARLAN.

Elsie was of the Wolf Clan (Nanye'HI)
She was on the 1852 Drennan roll: Illinois, 286 as Alsey Horskin.
Another sourse says she was the second wife of Daniel, but according to my research
she was wife number one and Elizabeth Ward was wife number two.

Daniel and Elsie had the following children:

Daniel married (2) Elizabeth Jane "Etta" WARD daughter of Charles Jackson WARD and Ruth HOLLINGSWORTH. Elizabeth died about 1871/1872 in Creek Nation.

Elizabeth was on the 1851 Old Settle: Illinois Dist, Group 194.
Elizabeth was on the 1902-07 Dawes roll: Parent, Creek Card 544, 836, 3263.
Elizabeth was White.
Elizabeth Jane WARD was dead 20-30- years in 1901 according to son Albert's citizenship application.
