Birth and Death Indexes

The Okfuskee County Historical Society has a bound book titled Okfuskee County Birth and Death Records prepared by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) that covers early births and deaths in the County. There is no information as to the source of the data contained in the book or the date(s) it was compiled. However, it appears the compiler had access to either doctors’ records or birth and death certificates. There are about 178 pages of typed information. Generally, births are in the first 152 pages of the book and deaths are in the last 26 pages. Entries are fairly date sequential with information for years fairly well together. Most typographical errors were corrected by type-over so some entries were difficult to read. Not every birth and death in the County during this time period was included.

Data provided on each entry varies. Information on births usually includes name, date of birth, race, sex, birth order, place, mother, mother’s age and place of birth, father, father’s age, place of birth, and occupation, and attending doctor or mid-wife. Sometimes the exact location of the birth is given, and rarely, cities or counties are listed with the state on the parent’s place of birth. Some entries indicate the race of the parents. For some reason, some children’s surnames have different spellings than the father’s surname. It is unclear if this was a typographic error during transcription or an error on the original document, however, entries were indexed as typed in the book. Most entries give the mother’s maiden name, but some give only first names or the married name.

Information on deaths usually includes the name, date of death, age, cause of death and the attending doctor. Some entries have place of birth, place of burial, race, sex, occupation, and even parent’s names and parent’s place of birth. Note that if the place of burial indicates Home Cemetery look for the burial around their homestead as there is no cemetery named Home in Okfuskee County.

The book was microfilmed by the LDS (Family History Center, film, FHL US/CAN 893730). The page numbers shown on the index will not be shown on the LDS microfilm as they were added after microfilming. Also, pages will not coincide exactly with the microfilm as some the pages in the book were not numbered (due to duplication) and some are loose making them possibly out of order from the LDS microfilm copy. If using the microfilm, count the pages as you go through the microfilm and then scan pages from this starting point (both forward and backward) to find your entry. Alternatively, count to the approximate starting point, find several names on that page, and recheck this index to see about where you are on the microfilm versus where you need to be.

The Coordinator can NOT provide any further information about any specific entry beyond what is given in the index.
