Pushmataha County Courthouse
Pushmataha County Courthouse

at Antlers, Oklahoma

Pushmataha was part of the Choctaw Nation prior to statehood in 1907. This beautiful county of rolling hills and pines, valleys with oak trees, lakes and streams of Southeast Oklahoma are easily accessible from the county seat of Antlers which has a population of about 2,254. The county population is about 10,997.
Along highway 3 are the towns of
Darwin, Rattan, Dela, Oleta and Corrine as well as Antlers. Highway 271 runs north to south through the county, through the towns of Albion, Tuskahoma, Clayton, Nashoba, Snow and Finley into Antlers. Just west of Antlers, you can take Highway 2 through Moyers, Kosoma, Dunbar & Stanley to Clayton, along the Kiamichi River. At Clayton, take Highway 43, that heads off to the south west, through Adel, ducks into Atoka County to Daisy, where you can take a county road back south into Pushmataha Co., through Jumbo and Miller to Highway 3 just a bit west of Dunbar. From Rattan, east of Antlers, a county road goes to the community of Cloudy.
The historic
Choctaw Capitol building is located in the north part of Pushmataha County at Tuskahoma. It houses the Choctaw Nation's National Museum and Judicial Department Court System. The Choctaw National Museum has a wide assortment of historic & cultural exhibits, which includes information and displays on the Choctaw Light Horseman, the Law Enforcement arm of the Historic Choctaw Nation. Legends tell that on occasion, the spirit of the Light Horseman may be seen riding across the Council Grounds and in their guard quarters in the Choctaw Capitol Building. It is one of the most outstanding Historical markers for the Choctaw Nation & hosts the annual Choctaw Nation Labor Day Festival.

Photo to the Left was Contributed by:   Wayne Harrison.
The largest or second largest oak tree in Antlers, Oklahoma. Five miles west and about a half a mile south of Antlers. The picture was taken looking west (towards Atoka).  The road is the old highway that went from Antlers to Atoka.  If you head out west to 5-mile corner (a mile past Coffee Creek) and go about one half mile south on Broomfield Road, and then back east about 200 yards - you can't miss it.  I think I remember someone telling that some official organization had been out there to survey the tree, but I wouldn't swear to that.  The Brown's live there now.
