Sequoyah County is in eastern Oklahoma and was created at statehood. The county took its name from Sequoyah District, Cherokee Nation. Sallisaw is the county seat of Sequoyah County. The post office was established 29 September 1873. The post office bearing the same name of Sallisaw was moved some fifteen miles south in 1888. The name of the former Sallisaw was changed to Mays on June 7, 1888. December 8, 1888, the name of the post office was changed to Sallisaw at Childer's Station. |
